As the teTeX on my system was quite old (teTeX 0.9), I decided to update by
installing 1.0 in my home directory. Now, when xdvi cannot find a pk font
it generates one in the current directory. My reading of the kpathsea
documentation is that the fonts should be generated in a more global
location, such <TEXMF>/fonts/pk, if the file permissions allow this, which
they do. Indeed, this is what teTeX 0.9 used to do. Can anyone suggest why
I am getting this unwanted behaviour? Does it have something to do with
the fact I did not install as root?
