Of course you're right, the wheel needn't be reinvented. But a little
more work may be necessary: LaTeX lines are specified by their slope and
horizontal or vertical extent. In case the horizontally spread cluster
notes have fixed distances, this is okay. But if their distance is
stretchable glue, the actual distance is not known a priori and thus has
to be retrieved by tracking the positions of the involved notes.
Therefore my question is: Are the horizontal distances within the
clusters fixed or glue?
