Latex has quite a few other nice fonts in teTeX (Un*x) and mikTeX (Win*)
nowadays: you can \usepackage bookman, charter, newcent, times, utopia  
and probably many others that I don't know.

Strictly speaking, none of those will substitute the named font for
"EVERY detail of formatting".  The details of how they handle sans-serif
and typewriter fonts differ: in some cases they would activate e.g.
helvetica or courier respectively, in others they might have their own
sans-serif but not their own typewriter, and in still others they might
keep Computer Modern typewriter (which I personally prefer to courier
since it is narrower).
