Gregorian music has a particular way of dealing with text: The text is in a way more important than the notes. The manuscripts are written in the following way: The writer writes the text untill he encounters the vowel of a syllabe. Then he puts puts all the necessary notes starting just above the vowel. Of course he finishes the syllable. This goes on till all the notes belonging to the syllable are written. Then the next syllable of the text starts ... Some pieces with only one note/syllable have some ammount of spacing between the syllables.
