All--

I'm thinking seriously about handling this matter and others related to it
within PMX, without requiring any new TeX coding. For any type-K linebreak
slur, the user should be able to control separately the shape and endpoint
locations of BOTH segments of the slur if he doesn't like the defaults. I
propose to enable this by expanding on the technique I used to modify
line-breaking ties; namely by splitting the slur into two separate slurs
(internally in PMX, but transparent to the user).

Here are some details as I now see them:

1. There would be a global option necessary to activate any of this; it
might just be Apl and include linebreak ties as well.

2. By default, the end of the first segment would be at the same height as
if it terminated on the the last note under the slur before the line break;
the horizontal position would be very close to the end of system just like
it is now.

3. By default, the start of the second segment would be at the same height
as if it started on the the first note under the slur after the line break;
the horizontal position would be shifted to the left just like it is now.

4. The up-downness would be the same for both segments.

5. No new syntax is needed for shape modification. If included with the
starting note it would apply to the first segment, if with the ending note
then it would apply to the second segment. If the slur happens not to be a
linebreak slur (due to changed layout etc) then I would use whichever one
now is used in case both are specificed (I'll have to check).

6. Some new syntax will be needed for end-point position modifications,
since the old syntax applies either to the start of the first segment or the
end of the second. Some key letter would have to precede the usual numbers
for vertical and horizontal tweaks, again if in the starting note it would
apply to the end of the first segment and vice versa. I can't use "l" or "b"
since they're already taken; maybe "s" (for system) or "x". These would be
ignored if the slur happened not to cross a linebreak.

7. It may be very difficult to account for slurs extending over more than
one linebreak. I might worry about that later but not now.

Please post comments or suggestions. Now's your chance to influence these
facilities. But don't hold your breath, this may take a while.
