Here is a brief translation in English of this page (I skim over the many
acronyms of French organizations :-) I am not familiar with mountain
and climbing techniques, and some experts may find better words. I hope
this translation will be useful.
He held a degree of the ESPCI school and a was a doctor in physics.
He was a researcher in a solid-state physics lab at Orsay University.
Was a member (and sometimes chairman or secretary) of several
mountaineering and rock climbing organizations.
He advocated a compromize in climbing practice between hobby and
competition styles, and wrote many articles on this topic. He fought
against a "via ferrata" equipment at a specific mountain.
Of course, he contributed to software of the TeX family.
The sad new appeared August 28, 2003. The funeral took place the 29th
at Bourg d'Oisans.
A plate with his name should be installed on a large railway bridge
close to Orsay (there are no more trains an this bridge since WW2, and it
*was* popular among climbers for years until it threatened to collapse.
Hopefully climbing there will soon be possible again).
