I do not know the configuration you have, but usually TeX prefers
metafont when both mf and pfb-files are available. To change that
default, edit the file <$TEXMF>/dvips/config/updmap and set
type1_default=true
Default is then to use the type1 fonts. Then run updmap and everything
should be oK.
