Dear list members,

thank you all for investing thoughts and time into my problem with grainy
PDF output! Everything you suggested for my configuration files was
already set in my system.

My last resort was deinstallation of everything with TeX in its name:
tetex, LaTeX, the fonts, configuration files, MusiXTeX, PMX and M-Tx
(including "rm -rf /usr/share/texmf"). Then I started from scratch
reinstalling everything (newest versions of everything concerning
MusiXTex and helpers). It ends all up with exactly the same situation I
had before. And I DO have the bluesky fonts. :-(

So I have come to the conclusion that the reason has to be gs because
- dvipdfm is fine as long as I can use it: normal LaTeX and MusiXTeX
without Type K slurs, and it does better compression than gs does.
- The PS files produced by dvips DO contain the type1 fonts (as can be
seen by stderr from dvips and the scalability of the resulting
  document).
- gs fails with every PDF, not only the letters in music typesetting.

I am now updating gs from 5.50 to 6.51 and hope this will help.

If not, then I will have to live with it, and my music contributions to
the archive stay grainy. Maybe I can get pstill running.

Best regards and thanks again,

J"urgen
