For what its worth, I looked into what PMX has to say about this. PMX
can do staff-jumping beams nicely, but unfortunately not beams with
varying multiplicity. Its usual method, inserting ][ , doesn't work
with staff-jumping beams.

Don Simons is well aware of this problem, but hasn't come up with an
easy answer as yet. Perhaps he can use your (not so horrible)
workaround!
