I've never used this package before. But when I look in tabdefs.tex, the
first thing I see is the following:

% Most symbols will look ugly on your dvi-viewer, because I put in
% some postscript code to put a white box behind them. The postscript
% file will look a lot better.

My tests using tabxampl.tex bear this out. Looks bad (i.e. black boxes) in
dvi wiewer, but looks fine in a postscript viewer. Is that your problem?
Have you looked at a postscript file or tried to print it out?
