I'm using tabdefs.tex for typesetting lute tablatures. I do not 
encounter display problems when opening dvi files with my linux xdvi 
viewer. I've uploaded the dvi output file from my most recent score 
involving tabdefs as

You could try to experiment with my abcpp/M-Tx sources as published in
