Windows ME: seriously? > The problem I am having is that, having followed the instructions in the > manual > to edit the batch file to install the various components, So you've installed MusiXTeX manually, not using MiKTeX's package for it (that's good - the version included in MiKTeX doesn't install musixflx for some mystical reason, although you can extract it from a cabinet file which is installed) > and running the MikTeX FNDB update, I cannot invoke musixflx. FNDB update has nothing to do with musixflx - the FNDB is used by TeX (and some auxiliary programs such as Yap) to locate input files, not by Windows to locate programs. > DOS reports "Bad command or filename" unless I navigate manually to the > directory > where the program is installed and invoke it from there. This sounds like your PATH is wrong in some way - what's the directory you've put it in and what's the exact setting of PATH? I think that in a Windows 9x/ME command prompt you can select Edit -> Mark from the system menu to copy text from a command prompt (just type echo %PATH% to print it) or I think you can also use the System Applet to get a copy of it (sorry - it's several years since I even had a virtualised copy of Windows '98 knocking around, I'm struggling to remember what's Windows NT and what's Windows '9x!). > I have checked that the PATH variable includes the directory where musixflx > and > companions reside, so am mystified that WinME cannot find the program unless > it > is invoked from the same directory 'o' If it's definitely working when you're in that directory and not working from elsewhere then something is wrong with your PATH setting even if you're struggling to spot it - but that will hopefully become clearer when you send the setting.
