TeX does provide a way - but sadly it's in the form of METAFONT!
Arbitrary lines is one of the reasons for using PostScript specials
(or MetaPost).
So it would be nice if someone who knows a whole lot more than I do about
PostScript and TeX would once and for all put together a (small) package to
draw a line of thickness t from point A to point B. I'm sure that would be
much much much simpler than the postscript music fonts.
such macros have been written already (pstricks). the trick would be to
develop a "glue" layer to link pstricks to musixtex
perhaps a better bet would be to go with pgf/tikz, a pair of packages
that do amazing graphics things within tex (or pdftex, ...) itself.
(the platform independence is alluring, but i've not even tried
programming pgf or tikz, myself.)
I've been using pstricks for drawing various symbols when converting
mensural notation part books to contemporary notation scores. A drawback
is that pstricks graphics are not compatible with pdftex (nor with dvipdfm).
When looking at the pgf/tikz manual pgfmanual.pdf.gz
(debian/ubuntu/mint: /usr/share/doc/texmf/pgf/pgfmanual.pdf.gz) coming
with tex-live I notice that pgf/tikz graphics
- work with plain tex
- are compatible with pdftex
- imply simple drawing tex syntax
