You didn't have to. MiKTeX would have done it for you. For one
diagonal line (unscaled), they are equally simple. But I've used
both pstricks and pgf to produce the charts at

http://www.cs.queensu.ca/students/undergraduate/prerequisites

and for me pgf was easier to configure for complex graphics.
