Your MusiXTeX example uses \Notes commands throughout. This
gives you the same spacing for quarter and eighth notes.

You might want to use the autosp pre-processor to generate
a .tex file with correct spacing.

autosp is especially helpful for multi-instrument scores.
The coding for an entire measure can be entered one part at
a time, without concern for note-spacing changes within the
part or spacing requirements of other parts. Of course, this
is also true for PMX, but PMX uses a completely different
input language.
