Thank you; I'm aware that the manual says it can be redefined. My
issue is HOW to redefine it, since my attempts are not working.

I copied the \eightit font definition from musixtex.tex and altered it 
to define a six-point font: \font\sixit=\fontid ti0600. This does 
work... when I'm not trying to use it to redefine \txt.

However, the moment I try saying \def\txt{\sixit 3}, all hell breaks 
loose in my test document. What am I doing wrong?
