The fact that this clause appears in a post on TeX-music puts the finger on a sore point. Ideally, he user of MusiXTeX should not need to know that there is a difference between font-based and PS slurs any more than the user of pdfLaTeX should need to know how \line in the picture environment is implemented. Worse, this can of worms extends to PMX, which is supposed to operate at a higher level than MusiXTeX. There should be an interface that uses PS slurs when they are available and does the best it can with font-based slurs when they are not. I am merely sounding my barbaric yawp over the rooftops on this matter; I do not have enough expertise to help.
