For me, it works perfectly without closing the pdf viewer - under debian
Linux, I use okular or xpdf as PDF viewer, under Windows SumatraPDF is a
PDF viewer which does not block the files and reloads the file without
losing the displayed page :-)

If you prefer adobe reader, there are possibilities to send closing and
opening commands to the reader - you may search in the web for
texniccenter and acrobat or something similar.
