The good news for 2013 is that it appears Mexico is safe again for foreign cavers to head to the Sierra Madres.
I spent the past hour trying to find reliable news information on the web of foreign tourist traveling in Mexico having their vacation interupted by crime during the 2013 year. Of the millions of tourist that visited, I only found 2 stories that stand out. In many of the stories, the tourist were not travelling in a group, or were allegedly trying to do something like purchase drugs, or they were Mexican-Americans visiting family. The story that seems to be the most troubling is the young girl from the Ukraine that disappeared in the Yucatan. Her young husband was found dead. They were the kind of tourist that would back-pack or go hiking. ( Weigh that against the number of young girls missing in the U.S. as a safety comparison ) Disclaimer: I only did a Google search in English, so it is possible I overlooked stories on YouTube or Facebook, or news stories in other languages, that don't make it to our news channels.
