Mark, Gill and I (and maybe George) became "ordained" by the Universal Life
Church back in the late Sixties for the price of a small, volunteer donation.
The church was set up - or at least attempted to be used, but unsuccessfully -
as a draft-dodging tool under the draft laws of that Viet Nam time.

I joined out of general religous/anti-religious contrariness, as did many
others, after it was apparent this ordination was useless for avoiding the
draft. But it remained popular with 20-something curmudgeons like myself for
some years thereafter. Our intent is now fulfilled for the general
curmudgeonly public by such better elaborated theologies for deities such as
Bob and the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Oztotl arose from the mists of the Mayan
past for Texas cavers around the same as our ordination, and in Florida we were
promoting The Great Newt as a caver deity.

I prefer to think of the status as "insub-ordination."

[I'm rejoining the list after years of being absent]

I'm one.

I'm not savvy on all the details, but there was ruckus amongthe leadership a
while back. Some records were lost.

If you're unsure of your credentials, you should verify themnow before you
really need them.

I'm not sure if the schism has healed or not.
