I'm not facebook savvy, but maybe there is a compromise here: Can you make a Cavetex fan page, and in the fan page description just place information about what cavetex is about, and how to join the listserve? I think you could also post some caving event photos as a marketting tool.
I am "young" and I avoid facebook because of its constant and pointless life updates of "friends" I haven't talked to in a decade. But I agree David, this is how a lot of people search for things. The three top search engines are, in order: Google, Youtube, Facebook.
