Take texas 46 to  texas 16, hang a rt.. turn left at Pipe Creek (471?) to Lakehills and go from there to the dam. Piece of cake.

My folks used to live out that way.

I think it is the ghastly horrific urban sprawl along 1604 causing the delays....I usually seek an alternate route....just to avoid seeing the aesthetic catastrophy taking place.

I too was stuck in traffic for hours the first year getting to this site. The second year I took the back roads from the north. I found the drive quite scenic and pleasant with some good hills and views and only a few critical turns that are not to be missed. A good atlas with county roads on it is all you need, or a GPS. A TX state road map or a google Maps print out will not have enough detail unless you zoom in close and print multiple pages. Be forewarned that country roads don't always have signs on them. Local teenagers have rooms with well signed 10 way junctions though. I wouldn't reccomend this route for those towing a trailer or camper.

You can take highway 46 across to highway 16 and drop down that direction.

Attention all cavers coming from up north down to Paradise Canyon on Friday night - DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT take 1604 in north San Antonio. We were stuck in traffic there for hours a few years back. Though looking at the map, it seems very complicated to take any country back roads to get there. Anyone know the way?
