This is especially pertinent to cavers who live in Texas. With Mexico so
close, why not take that time and money and go do some great caving south of
the border? It really depends on what you like. Many people enjoy traveling
around the country caving in new areas and meeting new people, while others
prefer to concentrate on the projects and areas they can visit regularly closer
to home.
In my opinion putting Convention activities on the web will not reduce
attendance. I think that people who want to go to Convention will still do it,
whether or not some of the activities can be viewed remotely. And who knows,
maybe some people who see things on the web will decide it looks interesting
enough to visit in person and start going to Convention in the future. One
thing that would help entice people to go would be for the organizers to post
the sessions abstracts on the Convention web site so that we could see what
programs and talks are being offered. Last year the abstracts were posted
about a month before Convention started. This year they still aren't posted
even though the submission deadline was June 20. Grr!
