I don't recommend going without vertical gear if you plan to do much
caving. There are a lot of pits in southern Indiana, and you will
significantly reduce your options if you are not prepared for vertical work. I
have been to the site of the NSS Convention twice before during the local Cave
Capers event, and we always did vertical caves.
