I found this small metal link in a scuba shop:

I have been using a similar-looking screw link on my vertical gear for about a year.
Mine is made by Petzl and is aluminum alloy. It is called the Speedy:
<http://en.petzl.com/petzl/Produit?Produit=362>. It is small and light and I use it
to attach the foot loop to my Jumar. Pricey, though, at $12(!) from IMO. Petzl also makes
a stainless steel version called the Presto:
<http://en.petzl.com/petzl/Produit?Produit=357>. Nearly three times the weight and
twice the strength of the aluminum one, and a dollar cheaper. Both of these are made for
climbing and are very strong, so they are safe to use on vertical gear or as anchors.
