I don't believe that anyone has yet mentioned one of the most prominent,  
directly cave-related, polite geographical name changes.  A major  commercial 
cave and generally important TAG cave in Alabama operated under the  name of 
"Nickajack Caverns."  This name was a creative rephrasing by its  owners of its 
original name (which I'll leave to the reader's imagination, lest  I get 
flamed, 
too).  The cave was inundated 40 years ago or so by  a reservoir
