>From David Locklear Please hit delete button now Day # 1 of the NSS Convention has passed and I was far far away in Houston. The stories of cavers there or the reports from them seem to be coming mostly via Facebook. ( feel free to correct me )
I have seen at least 4 Texas cavers so far post something. I am back at work in Houston and super duper bummed out. I should have tried harder to get there, but every time I looked at the map, it seemed so futile to plan a drive, even as far as Casper. To pour salt on the wound, I had few obligations preventing me from attending Day # 1. I looked at several bizarre options for getting there, such as driving to Denver and stashing my Sequoia at a Park-n-Ride and then hitchhiking the rest of the way, or more realistically trying to catch a ride from there with other cavers. I had hoped to put my new speleo-luggage rack to the full-test, even though I haven't finished it completely yet. I drove last week, nearly to Fayetteville, Arkansas and back and did not even use it, and another road-trip to and from Mansfield, Texas. ( I have not worked in 7 or 8 days ) Had I had a crystal ball, I could have worked all week and made enough money to go. Then, I could have caught a Craigslist ride to Fort Collins, but even under the best of conditions, I would have probably not arrived at the convention till Tuesday ( tomorrow ). I had already given up and moved on to other things when I saw the new ad for a rider to Fort Collins. Had I been more focused on the goal of getting to Helena, I think in hindsight, I would have got close. I spent the past few months trying to do normal things like visit family, and friends, and play on my Linux computer. Had I blown off some of that and just got serious about going, I would have probably been better off, as none of those things seemed to be very productive. Here are some fuzzy pictures of my road-trip: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/82umttrtioj46eb/AACD7l7WIniL0P2vxQj6zQEZa?dl=0 That young lady with the iPhone glued to her hand is Cavepearl. I guess it is worth noting that cavers united and raised $ 4 for my gas money to go to the NSS Convention. I hope somebody will donate it to a good cause. I probably could have raised some more, if I had made it to Helena. My real concern was getting home and missing work this week. There is a saying that it does not count to climb Mt. Everest if you don't make it down alive. Sort of the same scenario. Right ?? D.L.
