I am aware of the problem [1] and have been playing with the idea to use dynamic scopes to have smart typing disabled when snippet place holders are fully selected.

Maybe -- for now a workaround would be to make your placeholders like this ${1:"${2:a string}"} or ${2:"${1:like this}"}.
