Since Michael is asleep, I'll just say that the language suffix in
question is simply the trailing part of a scope identifier --
"string.quoted.single.prolog", for example. ".pl" would be the
default filename extension; however, the fileTypes section of the
Prolog language grammar is empty. It seems that the author of the
Prolog bundle hasn't included it.
You're right; the change as nothing to do with file suffixes. Sorry
