*Nurturing optimism * * Parents with the tenacity to knock on the doors of
opportunity for their two sons with hearing disability. * Bijoy Ghosh

*Special efforts:* Lavanyam (left) with parents Mangaya Tilagam and
Chinnadoria, who did not allow his hearing disability to come in the way of
his engineering education and subsequent employment as a systems engineer at
Maveric Systems, Chennai.

It requires a rare combination of guts, perseverance and patience to put
not one, but two children with severe hearing handicaps through an
engineering education.

But Mangaya Tilagam and Chinnadorai — she a schoolteacher in a government
school in Chennai and he a former Indian Air Force man who now works in the
LIC — had the right mix of optimism and tenacity to do that. The result is
that their eld er son Lavanyam, 27, landed a good job at Maveric Systems, a
software testing company in Chennai, as a testing engineer in 2007.
