The reading a short script on India's first effort to win independence was
nice.

I am presently reading a book on *Mutiny a novel* by a british author. He
has given account of happenings in Meerut, Umbala, Cawnpore, and
Barrackpore. *Each person had a different reason for taking part*. Tatya
Tope of Bithure was stripped of title of Peshwa and rule of Bithure. He
tried representing against this decision to highest authority in London.
Rani Laxmi Bai, was stipped off rule of Jhansi and she too appealed that her
adopted son be made King of Jhansi. Wazid Ali Shah of Oundh (Lucknow) lost
is kingdom and his soldiers wanted him to lead. Bahadur Shah Zafar was no
more emporer of Hindustan. He was King of Delhi and restricted to the four
walls of Red Fort and living on Pension given by East India Company. He was
happy taking his daily doze of opium, writing poetry and enjoying company of
women of his harem. His sons were declared Badmash by British Commissioner
of Delhi but could not be arrested due agreement between Company Sahib and
King Zafar. The rebel soldiers from Meerut wanted him to lead but he very
reluctantly agreed under pressure from his sons. Punjab had no reasons for
unhappiness as it was not productive for east india co. Pathans and waziers
were mercernaries soldiers. West Punjab (present day Pak) was developed
later in late 1890 for cotton production. It had recently lost battle with
Company after demise of Maharajah Ranjit Singh. There was hardly any
resistance from Maharastra, Hyderabad and rest of South India. The whole
thing was restricted to North UP, Cawnpore and Bundelkhand.

Soldiers had their reasons since Native Regiments had Native Officers but
British Sgts in Native Regiment used to use derogatory language to Native
Superiors. The cartidge was only an excuse to rouse their anger. The main
effort was by Maulavis and Sadhus to incite the soldiers. Chappaties was
used as code word to spread the news. Maulavis gave call for Jehad against
the Firangies.

The orders given to Governor Gen by the Board of Directors were unrealistic
as none of Directors had even visited India. They were more interested in
profits of the company and controlling land for their requirement of raw
materials for factories in GB.
