To all the people who responded to my earlier post below with logic like,
"I'm a Hindu, this is my country, we are in a majority, cows are sacred to
us, so what's wrong with banning beef trade.??"
Here is my response.
First, sure, you might be a Hindu. But I am not. And neither are some 200
million people in India. So while it is your country, it is also my country
and the country of these 200 million people too. So let's be clear, India
is NOT a Hindu nation. It is a secular nation.
Second, you may be in a majority, but so what?
Apparently right-handers outnumber left-handers in India and according to
some news today, married women outnumber married men in India. Does that
mean we are a nation that has to only serve right-handed married women?
Nope. Majority means nothing when it comes to personal rights and liberties.
Third, sure, you consider the cow sacred and won't eat it.
Well, I consider spinach sacred and won't eat it. But that doesn't mean I
can stop you from eating spinach and you can stop me from eating cows. Why
don't you worry about your diet, I'll worry about mine.
Oh, and if you're some serious Hindu religious person, you should do a
little research - you'll see that beef was eaten by Hindus for thousands of
years. All this "*we-don't-eat-beef*" thing… is a much more modern
political thing. It has little to do with facts, history or religion. Sure,
you ARE entitled to your thoughts on what you want to or don't want to eat.
But please don't give it some religious or historical significance because
it has very little of either. Leave it for what it is… personal choice.
Fourth, what was the reason for this legislation? Have you achieved
anything good for anybody by stopping people, me included, from eating what
we like? I don't deny you your dal-bhaat. Who are you to deny me my Kerala
beef fry or beef burger?
Fifth, is this what the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected for?
Of all the things that Maharashtra needs, apparently a ban on beef is more
important and pressing than solving water, electricity and jobs problems?
You guys got elected on a platform of making business easier and solving
important problems. Why do you need to knee-jerk react to kiss up to the
old RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) seniors from Nagpur – were they
elected to run the state - or were you..??
