8. FOOD VESSEL AND VAIGAI

The Lord then thought of Annapoorani Devi, the Cosmic Mother who fulfills
the food; instantly four food vessels full of curd rice appeared.
Gundothara was filled with food and bloated like a hillock. But was filled
with thirst and drank up all the water from the water resources, like
wells, lakes, rivers of Madurai, still his thirst was not quenched.

Then the Lord made the Ganga from his crest to flow into a river.
Gundothara drankoff it and was quenched of his thirst. Then the river
assumed the name ‘Vaigai’, as the Lord commanded him in those words. Then
the Lord Somasundara ruled the world with Thadathagai.

To satisfy the insatiable hunger of the Sivaganam, Lord Siva sought the
help of Devi Annapoorni! She made the finest mixture of curds and rice
swell up from four different pits. The sivaganam ate with both his hands
until his hunger was satisfied.

Now he was bulging with the food in his stomach and developed an
unquenchable thirst! He drank water from the wells, ponds and river-lets
until everything went dry! Yet his thirst was not quenched! Again he sought
the help of Lord Siva.

Siva ordered Ganga to flow down as a river in Madhuraapuri. Ganga had one
request!

“You have blessed me as river Ganga that I can wash away the sins of
everyone who touches my water. I seek a similar boon here too! Please bless
me so that whoever touches my water here would develop bhakti, gnaanam and
vairaagyam and attain mukthi.”

Lord Siva blessed her as she requested! Ganga descended from the matted
coils of Siva’s hair and started flowing as a river in Madhuraapuri. She
got a new name Vegavathi-because of the speed of her flow !

All the rivers are personified as female goddesses! The waves of the river
became the bangles of Vegavathi. The pearls in the river were her pearly
white teeth. The bubbly surface became her dainty dress. The black soil was
her thick black hair. The floating flowers became her various ornaments.

The bootham stretched his long arms along the two banks of the river and
stopped the flow of the river. It formed a pool of water. The bootham drank
water till his thirst was quenched.

Did the river get a new name “Vai kai” (meaning “keep your hands!” )
because the bootham did so?

Did it get the name Siva Ganga since it descended from the matted hair of
Lord Siva?

Did it get the name of Kruthamaalai since it ran round the Madhuraapuri
like a garland or a ‘maalai’?
