21. FEEDING A STONE ELEPHANT. “I should have gone and met that mahaan! It was wrong on my part to order him to come to meet me in the palace!” The king kept on musing in this line of thought.
Apparently, the Siddha also was keen on meeting the king! On a Makara Sankranthi day, the Siddha Purusha sat on the north western side of the Indra Vimaanam. The King was doing Pradakshinam of the temple. The king’s bodyguards would make way for the king in crowded places. They ordered the Siddha Purusha to move away and make way for the king. By that time the king himself had reached that spot. He threw many questions at the Siddha, ”Which is your place and city? Who are your relatives? What is your business here?” The Siddha replied with a smile, “I come from Kasi. All the devotees of Siva are me relatives. My business is performing miracles and refreshing people with my tricks!” The confidence with which the Siddha spoke, made the king want to test his ability. He took a sugar cane and told the Siddha to feed it to the stone elephant seen in the temple. The Siddha told the king to turn back and look at the stone elephant. It had already opened its eyes wide. It waved its trunk and was chewing the sugar cane, dripping its rich juice all over the place.The King stood wonder struck! Now the naughty elephant grabbed the gold haram of the king. The bodyguards threatened the elephant with their sticks raised. It gobbled the king’s haram! Now the anger of the bodyguards turned on the Siddha Purusha. They raised their sticks to beat him. He said, “Stop!” and they all froze like statues in mid action. Now the truth dawned on the king that the Siddha was none other than Lord Siva Himself. He prostrated to the mahaan. He was offered a boon. The king wished for a successor in the form of a worthy son. Siddha gave him the boon and the elephant returned his haaram. At that moment the sidhdha disappeared and the elephant became a stone elephant once again!
