*57 (C). THE DIVINE FISHERMAN.*

*The moment Siva decided to give sapa vimochanam, he acquired the form of
divine fisherman.*

*He was dark, stunningly handsome, strong, slim, broad shouldered and
narrow waisted. He had tied up his dress well. A sword hung at his waist.*

*Flowers dripping with honey decorated his hair. He wore a vest made of a
thin hide. His assistant carried the heavy fishing net on his shoulder.*

*He walked to the king of the fishermen, who asked the newcomer, “Who are
you my handsome boy?”*

*Siva replied,”I am the son of the king of fishermen in Madurai. I have
come to marry your daughter! I am an expert in throwing the net. The sea is
my play ground.”*

*“Only the man who could capture the troublesome shark can marry my
daughter!”*

*Siva (turned to a fisherman) got into a boat, with his assistant. They
soon disappeared from the sight.*

*Siva threw his net far and wide. The shark got caught in it but it dragged
them all over the sea. It tried every trick known to it to escape from the
net.*

* (D). THE SHARK IS CAPTURED!*

*Siva held on to the net with all his might. The shark became very tired
eventually and could swim no more! Siva pulled the shark ashore.*

*The wedding took place as promised by the king of fisher folks. But where
were the newly weds? What had happened to them? Lord Siva and Devi Uma
stood there instead of the newly weds!*

*The shark transformed into Nandhi Devan. The divine couple were now seated
on the divine bull. Whoever was present there and saw this rare spectacle
gained pure knowledge and pure bliss. All their sins vanished without a
trace.*

*Lord Siva spoke to the chief,” I was pleased with your
sincere devotion. That is why I made Uma your daughter. I too became your
sin in law. You will be bestowed with every wealth in the world like
Kuberan. You will live a very long life filled with happiness and joy. When
your time comes. you will attain saayujya mukthi.”*

*They all left for the kshethram called Uththira Mangai. Siva again did the
upadesam of the sacred and secret meanings of the Vedas.*

*Siva yogis, devotees as well as Uma Devi listened to it with fervor. On
the whole 60,000 persons reaped the benefit of Siva’s upadesam.*
