*62. Jainism and Saivism.* *Jaganaathan was the son of Paandiyan Arimardhanan. He was succeeded by Veerabaahu and eight other kings. Koon Paandiyan was the ninth king. He had a hunch back and the nick name Koon Paandian stuck to him.*
*He conquered the Chera and Chozha kingdoms. He ruled the three Tamil kingdoms as a chakravarthi. The Chera King presented him with Gold, gems and beautiful women to get back his kingdom.* *The Chozha king married his daughter Mangaiyarkkarasi and gave a lot of wealth, gifts, servants and a minister named Kulach chiriyaar. He was well versed and soon became the chief minister.* *Koon Paandiyan had become a Jain. Vedas and Agamaas were neglected. Jainism spread as the weeds do, after a heavy rain fall.* *The citizens followed the king. The queen and the minister did not know what to do.* *They went to the Siva temple and prayed to him to revive the Saivism and remove Jainism. They saw a pleasant faced brahmin in the temple. He had visited the Thillai and had come to worship the Siva in Aalavaai.* *The minister asked him,Where have you come from?”The brahmin replied, “I have come from the Chozha kingdom”* *The minister asked him, “What is the news there?”* *The brahmin started talking about Thirugnana sambanthar.* * GNAANA SAMBANDHAR.* *“In Sikaazhi, a great devotee is born to Sivapaada hrudhaya and Bagavathi ammaiyaar. The baby is indeed blessed.* *He had the dharshan of Lord Siva seated on Nandhi when he was just a three year old boy. He drank the milk of wisdom from the hands of none other than Uma devi.* *He is immersed deep in Siva Consciousness. He goes round from temple to temple, singing Siva’s praise. Goddess Saraswathi lives on his tongue.* *He gives the concepts of Veda in easy Tamil songs. Siva loves his songs and has presented him with a pearl canopy, a pearl palanquin and cymbals of gold.* *He was presented with a measure of gold coins in Thiru veezhi mizhalai. In thiru maraik kaadu, he made the temple doors close. He will surely visit Aalavaai.”* *The minister and the queen were relieved to hear this. They sent a message to Sambandhar through the brahmin. All was not lost. Saivism could still be revived.* *The brahmin took the message to Sambandhar. It read,“Jainism must be destroyed. Saivism must be revived. The king’s mind must be changed. The Vedic chanting must be resumed”.* *THE JAINS AND SAMBANDHAR.* [image: image.png] *Sambandhar wanted to go to Aalavaai. At that time Thiru Navukkarasu was with him and stopped the proposed journey.* *He said,” The positions of the planets are unfavorable. The Jain will stop at nothing to have their way. Please postpone your visit until the planetary positions become better. You are no more than a child yet!”* *Sambandhar replied,”Sire! you have survived the terrible hardships inflicted on you by the ruthless Jain by the mercy and grace of Lord Siva. He will surely protect me from dangers. The planets are all his loyal servants.”* *He sang the collection of songs known as Kolaru pathigam. and left for Aalavaai in his pearl palanquin under the pearl canopy .* *On the way he stopped in all the holy places and sang on Lord Siva. They reached near Madurai. The group was shouting,* *“He, who is the terror to the other religions, is here!He, who is the Sun dispelling the dark Jainism, is her!”* *The Jain guru blocked their way. But Sambandhar got through their blockade and reached Aaalavaai. He did pradakshinam and worshiped Siva.* *He prayed to God,”Oh god, who had burnt Manmathan! Please give me the power and ability to win over the Jain gurus in a debate and revive Saivism as before!”* *Vaageesar requested Sambandhar to spend the night in his madam. Sambandhar readily accepted the invitation. That very night the Jain gurus performed an Abhichaara homam.* *They ordered Agni to burn down the madam where Sambandhar was staying. Agni shivered at the prospectus, wondering how could fire burn fire?* *The gurus carried the fire and placed it in the madam. Fumes of smoke rose high but Agni was hesitating to burn down the madam.
