 THE TREATMENT.

The pearl canopy swayed beautifully. Sambandhar traveled in the pearl
palanquin. He agreed to cure the king’s fever and sweep away Jainism.

The city stood well decorated. Poorna kumbam was placed in front of every
house. The lamps were lit and the incense burnt as a sign of welcome.

Sambandhar sat on a gold throne studded with corundum. The very sight of
the child prodigy assured the king that soon he would be cured.

“Please cure me sire!” he begged with his palms in anjali. The Jain gurus
were angry that Sambandhar had come there to play some kind of magical
tricks.

They told the king, “Let him treat your right side. We will treat the left
side. Let us find out who is able to cure faster!”

They did not wait for the king’s reply but started sprinkling their holy
water, chanting their mantra and used gently their peacock feather .

The fever seemed to increase. King’s suffering also increased. Then they
sat quietly, ashamed of their futile attempt.

Sambandhar took the holy ash from his small bag. The Jain objected saying
that it was magical in nature. Sambandhar ordered a servant to go to the
kitchen in the temple and bring the ash of the burnt fire wood from the
stove.

He gently applied it to the right side of the king’s body and sang the
Thiru neetrup pathigam “manthiram aavathu neeru”
The fever reduced as if by a magic wand.

The king felt as cool and refreshed as if a paste of sandal in rose water
had been applied to his body. He begged Sambandhar to treat his left side
also.

What a miracle! The moment the ash from the stove was applied to his left
side, the fever disappeared completely. So also the king’s hunchback. He
became the most handsome king ever and got the tile Soundharya Paandian.

He got the sookshma panchaakshara upadesam from Sambandhar. His gentle
touch, his kind words, his sweet songs changed the king’s mind completely.

He became a devotee of Siva and enshrined Him in his heart.

THE HEAT OF THE FEVER.

Sambandhar sang a pathigam ordering Agni to afflict the king Koon Paandian
in the form of a fever. Agni did as he was ordered. He afflicted the King
in the form a terrible fever. Since Agni himself was the cause of the
fever, it was beyond all treatment!

The pearls worn by the king popped due to his body heat. His
swan-feather-bed got charred completely. His fresh flower garlands
withered. He suffered baldy.

The queen and minister administered the best medicines given by the best
doctors. Manthram, yanthram, thanthram and gems were of no use in bringing
down the fever. The king became very tired and weak.

The Jain gurus tried their best to bring down the temperature but in
vain. The night prolonged into a nightmare.

In the morning the minister told the king,
“Nothing and no one is able to bring down the fever. May be we should take
the help of Thirugnaana Sambandhar. There is no other choice!”

The king did not approve this idea.”I can’t appear with viboothi smeared
over my forehead anymore”

The minister said, “Let us bring Sambandhar at least as a doctor!”

The king agreed half heatedly. The queen and the minister were happy as if
already the king’s fever had been cured. The city was decorated in the most
auspicious manner to welcome Sambandhar.

The minister met Sambandhar and spoke to him,
“Saivism must be revived. The Jainism must be removed. The king must change
his mind. Please cure the fever of the king”
