* சூளுறவு கொண்டேனோ கோட்டியூராரைப் போலே ‘சூள்’ என்றால், சபதம் அல்லது ஆணை
என்று பொருள். திருக்கோட்டியூர் நம்பி, ஆளவந்தாரின் முதன்மை சீடர்களுள்
ஒருவர். ஆளவந்தார், திருக்கோட்டியூர் நம்பியிடம் , தனக்குப் பின்னர்
மடத்தையும் சமயத்தையும் காக்க வரும் இராமானுஜருக்கு எட்டெழுத்து மந்திரத்தை
உபதேசிக்க அறிவுறுத்தியிருந்தார். ஆயினும் தகுதியற்றவர்க்கு இதைக் கற்பிக்கக்
கூடாது எனவும் கூறியிருந்தார் ஆளவந்தார். எனவே இவரிடம் இராமானுஜர் எட்டெழுத்து
மந்திரத்தின் பொருளைக் கற்க வரும் பொழுது பதினெட்டு முறைகள் மறுத்து உடையவரின்
தகுதியைச் சோதித்த பின்னரே கற்பித்தார். திருக்கோட்டியூர் நம்பிகள்,
திருவெட்டெழுத்து மந்திரம் பரம இரகசியம் என்றும், எவருக்கும் வெளியிடக்கூடாது
என்ற நிபந்தனையுடன் உபதேசத்தருளினார். ஆனால் உபதேசம் பெற்றவுடன்
திருக்கோட்டியூர் கோவில் கோபுரத்தின் மேலேறி, அனைவருக்கும் கேட்டு உய்யும்படி
எல்லோருக்கும் உபதேசம் செய்தார் இராமானுஜர். இதனால் மிகுந்த கோபமுற்ற
திருக்கோட்டியூர் நம்பி இரகசிய மந்திரத்தை இப்படி யாவருக்கும் சொல்வது
குருவின் சொல்லுக்கு துரோகமிழைப்பதாகும் என்றும் இதற்கு நரகம் புக நேரிடும்
என்றும் கடிந்துக்கொண்டார்.இராமானுஜர், “திருவெட்டெழுத்தின் பயனைப் பலர்
எய்தும் பொருட்டுத் தான் ஒருவன் நரகம் செல்வது உகந்தது”, என்றார். இந்தப்
பதிலைக் கேட்ட திருக்கோட்டியூர் நம்பி, அரங்கனின் கருணையையும் இவரின் கருணை
மிஞ்சிடக் கண்டு இவரே எம்பெருமானார் என்று மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் ஆலிங்கனம் செய்து
கொண்டார்.திருக்கோட்டியூர் நம்பி மறைபொருளைத் தகுதி அறிந்து உரைக்க வேண்டும்
என்று உறுதி கொண்டிருந்தார். இராமானுஜர் திருக்கோட்டியூராரிடம் மறைபொருளை
எப்படியும் பெறுவது என்று சூளுரைத்து, பதினெட்டு முறை முயன்று பெற்றார்.
இருவரும் சூள் உரைத்து ஒருவரை ஒருவர் அறிந்து கொண்டனர்.திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள்,
“திருக்கோட்டியூரார் போல் உறுதியுடன் உபதேசித்தேனா அல்லது உபதேசம் தான்
பெற்றேனா?”, என்கிறார்.========********========* ********========

*sULuRavu koNdEnO kOttiyUrAraip pOlEThirukkotiyur Nambi is one of the chief
disciples of Alavandhar. He was bestowed with the responsibility of
teaching the meanings of rahasya thrayam – thirumanthram, dhvayam and
Charama Slokam to Ramanujar. Periya Nambigal, acharya of Swami Ramanuja,
told Ramanuja that Alavandar had left the task of teaching him the
rahasyartthas to Thirukkotiyur Nambi and instructed Ramanuja to go to
Thirukkottiyur Nambi and learn the meanings.Ramanuja walked to
Thirukkottiyur from Srirangam and sought Nambi and asked him to teach the
meanings. However, Nambi refused to do so right away. He wanted to test
Ramanuja and confirm that he was indeed worthy of receiving these great
meanings.Ramanuja made this trip from Srirangam to Thirukkottiyur eighteen
times before Nambi was convinced. After testing Ramanuja’s faith and his
eagerness in learning the truth and his strong spirit which is capable of
overcoming the unsettled mind, Thirukkottiyur Nambi felt that Ramanuja
deserves what it takes to know Thirumantra.Nambi took a vow from Ramanuja
("sULuRavu") that he would not reveal the meanings to anyone and taught him
the meanings of Thirumantra - once again, he took a vow from him not to
teach these meanings to anyone without testing. Ramanujar, after learning
this meaning from his acharya, ran immediately to the temple top and
gathered people in front of the temple and shouted aloud the mantra and its
meanings. Nambi, fumed with anger on knowing about Ramanujar’s act and said
–“You revealed the truth to everyone, even to the undeserved souls. You
also disobeyed your acharya’s words and your promise. For this act, you
will go to hell. You know all this. Why did you do it?”Ramanujar replied,
“I may go to hell for disobeying your orders but as a result of this one
sin of mine, many souls will be uplifted and they will attain salvation.
Mankind will be saved.” Nambi, overwhelmed in Ramanujar’s concern for
mankind and huge heart in providing true spiritual help to others, he gave
him a special name –Emperumaanar! Thirukkotiyur Nambi vowed to understand
the strength of Ramanujar’s mind and Ramanujar vowed to learn from Nambi,
under any circumstance. Such, their bond grew stronger, everytime, as a
result of their vows.*
