Q1         Why is a Tirthankara called so in Jainism?

A1          By Sri Naman Chakraborty UpdatedMay 18, 2020

This is a super interesting question.

Let me try and explain this, with the help of a visual demo.Notice theAfghan
soldier, walking through the shallow waters, trying to cross the Kabulriver?

A specific part of a larger water body, which is shallow enough to allowpeople
to walk-across, in Sanskrit, is called a ‘Tirtha’.

That’s why, in earlier days, the places where one could cross a river or lake by
foot, were called a Tirtha.

Now hold on to this thought for a moment and read on.

All ancient Indian beliefs concur that life is an unending cycle ofbirth, death
and rebirth.

The followers of Jainism take this belief further and reckon that human life is
tethered to acontinuous cycle of rebirths and reincarnations – bonded
tocrisscross the endless ocean of suffering, known as the Samsara.

According to the Jain belief, there have been a select few, who did manage to
decodeand hack this painful and complex system of crisscrossing the Samsara
andgained eternal freedom, which is known as the Nirvana.

Simply stating, these enlightened beings, thanks to their sheerperseverance and
intellect, basically found a Tirtha, or a shallow part of theotherwise deep and
limitless Samsara, to cross-over to the other side. So, these founders of
Tirthaacross the Samsara - came to be known as Tirthankaras.

According to Jain scriptures, there have been 24 such Tirthankaras in
thecurrent age - the first one is known as Rishabhnatha ji and the 24th and
thefinal is known as Mahaveera ji.

A2          By Sri Dev Pandey on September10, 2019

The name of Shivas Trishulis VIJAY, Not Pinaak as few people think, this
trishul is also eternallike Nag, Nandi, Vyaghrcharm of Shiva, No body made it
but Shiva himself. This is eternal most powerfulweapon among all others like
Bramhastra Vaishnavastra , Pashupatastra etc,Though Sudarshan Chakra and all
other weapons, have been stopped or have notworked some time, like Vishnus
Chakra has not hurt Maharishis Dadheehi who thandefeated Vishnu and It also
could not hurt VeerBhadra when Vishnu hurled itover him at Daksha yagna.

Yet there is no incident whenTrishul was stopped or any one escaped it, Once
when Shiva was about to throw it on ShankhaChood a divine voicebegged him to
not do so, it said Oh Pralayankar just your eye glance is capableof
incinerating whole universe, If you will throw it on him, than maryada of
Vishnu will bebroken as this daitya is wearing Narayan Kavach, hence to
maintainrespect of Narayan kindly do not hurl it on him, Than Shree Hari
himself askedthe Kavach from Shankhachood than Shiva dealt with him.

The three shoolas of trishul allegorially are to free his Bhaktas fromall pain
and misery traya taaps, Trishul destroys, Adhibhautik, Adhyatmic, andAdhidaiwik

A5          By Vishnupriya Lakshmipriya Updated December 14-2020

Lord Krishna was not buried. Hewas cremated.

According to the Mahabharata, a fight breaks out at a festival among
theYadavas, who end up killing each other. Mistaking the sleeping Krishna for a
deer, a hunter namedJara shoots an arrow that fatally injures him. Then he came
andapologized to Krishna. Krishna said its ok and died. Then Jara did
Antimsanskar of Krishna. Well but tohis Surprise, Lord Krishna's heart did not
get cremated. So he floatedthe heart in the Arabian Sea. Later a priest saw it.
The heart was very bright.Direct eyesight can definitely destroy the ability to
see. Then the Priest without lookingat the heart applied clay on it and than he
took it to the Jagannath temple.

There, inside the idol of Krishna, the heart is kept. Once in nineteenth
years, the heart is taken out andput into another idol with closed eyes. Once a
priest took out theheat to clean and put it in another idol without closing his
eyes. His eyesight was lostforever. And the big thing is

My note- What is told is a newinformation to me. Can be either correct ornot
correct.

Q6         Why did Rama divide the kingdom between Kush and Luv?

A6          By Sri Varada Amonkar on December 19-2020.

Lord Rama had two sons therefore he had to equally bestow and divide hiskingdom
Ayodhya.

Padma Purana states about sonsof Lord Rama.

“Kusha and Lava were sons of Lord Rama; those of Lakshman wereAngad and
Chandraketu; sons of Bharata were Taksha and Pushkar; and Subáhu andŚúrasen
were Śatrughna’s sons.”

Ayodhya was then abandonedafter Lord Rama went into Sarayu river with Bharata
and Shatrughna and theirwives.

Lord Rama made his son Lava ruler of Shravasti which was North Kosala .He also
founded city of Lava puri. Kusha founded Kushavati(Kusasthali) placewhich
became capital of Kosala kingdom. It is said Kusha ruled Kashmir, IndusRiver
and Hindu Kush as frontier lands of India known as Hindu Kush Kshetra.

Lord Lakshman's sons who were Angad and Chandraketu ruled countries
nearHimalayas whose capital (s) were Angadi and Chandravaktra. Bharata's
sonsTaksha and Pushkar were sovereigns of Gandharapradesh but they both
livedwithin Takshashila and Pushkaravati. Śatrughna's sons Subahu and Surasen
ruled Mathura.

Lord Rama had four siblingstherefore kingdom had to be divided. Lord Rama was
eldest son of Dashratha. Therefore Lava and Kushainherited their father's
kingdom Kosala. Shatrughna slayed Lavana who was sonof demon Madhu and became
ruler of Mathura therefore his sons inheritedMathura. Lord Lakshman's sons also
ruled countries within Himalayas and maybewe may say these two sons founded
these places or inherited these from theirfather.

Q7         What are some rarely known facts about Indian temples?

A7          By Ari Narayan on October 23-2020.

Most people can identify this structure. It is the magnificent Konark Surya
Mandir.

It was called the Black Pagoda by the sailors who came to the thenbustling port
of Konark. It was built by Langula Narsimhadeva I of the GangaDynasty in 1250
CE. This was the original set up of the structure before itsdestruction.

Such a design was common for Surya Mandirs and is also seen in theMartand Surya
Mandir in Anantnag, Kashmir built by Lalitaditya Muktapida of theKarkota
Dynasty in the 8th century.

What now remains in Konark isonly the Jaga-Mohan.

It is said that the Deul of the Mandir housed a Surya Pratima or idolwhich
floated in air. It was supported by a huge 52 ton lodestone which wasfixed in
the kalas or the dome of the structure. The magnet held together thestructure
which was supported by iron pillars and rods. It also allowed themagnetic Sun
idol to float. It is said that the rays of the Sun fell directlyupon it
throughout the day for all 365 days of the year.

The magnetic effect of thelodestone was so strong that it caused disturbance in
the ships compasses those passed by the coast (Konark being a majorport at that
time), thus making the navigation very difficult for the sailors. To save their
trade and theirships, the Portuguese sailors destroyed the temple and took away
the lodestone. The removal of the lodestone leads to the collapse of the main
templestructure.

Today, only the Jaga-Mohan and a part of the Natya Mandir remains. But this
tells us the richarchitectural knowledge that our ancestors possessed. The use
of magnets isstill not adopted in construction. But ancient Hindu structures
show how theycould be used to help a structure stand and even float.

If we look into ourpre-invasions history, we would discover many such wonders;
some that survivedat least in the form of stories, others that tooktheir
stories with them.
