THE CHAIN- PART 2 Dearfriends,
Letme continue with some more interesting information about chain. I am happy overthe number of responses received for the part 1 of the posting. I desiremembers never miss the game told in the last subheading. Sincerely, Gopala Krishnan 2-1-2013. Reposted on 21-1-2021 after editing and updating information. R. Gopalakrishnan. 1.Jeweler shops and chain. Anytype of gold garlands whether it is appearing like chain or very similar tochain, it is called goldchain. Many people wear aranjanam (a tightchain in the waist below belly.) either with gold or with silver. Many types ofaranjanam are in chain form. Male members wear a cloth covering genitals usingit called Koupeenam. While performing poojas in temples, it is compulsory thepriests should wear Koupeenam inKerala. Padasaram worn by girls and young women is mostly in the chain form either it ismade of gold or silver. Now a day many Brahmin women wearthaali in the chain, rather than in yellow thread. Some girls after marriage, changethali to golden chain from yellow thread after a week in an auspicious day. I never felt anything wrong with such practicefrom the very beginning; onemergencies the gold chain was very helpful for getting loans replacingwith gold covered chain as the last resort. In Tamilnadu most women from other casteswear thali in yellow thread. 1a.Thaali and Vedam Now on reading from net postings Ihave noted Thaali was not a Vedic practice at all. It is not mentioned inVedas. Only sapthapathiis told during marriage. However mantras are there foradorning thaali now. Before thaali charthal pada pooja is performed to groom.Mantras are there for everything introduced by a sage or well knowing purohit, which is a MISSING LINK. In fact during unfortunate death ofhusband also, there are manthras recited, before removing the thaali. The ladyretains thaali for 10 days. Whether knowing these things ornot, one of my cousin lady was not ready to remove her thaali, on the husband’sdeath. She still wears it. If it would have been recent, I would have quotedabout thaali is not at all an item told in Vedas. During shashti abda poorthi also a2ND THAALI IS ADORNED TO HIS WIFE, which is muhurtha. Here too AFTERat least 35 years, the thaali is again brought from the wife’s side forwearing. Here also I find a MISSINGLINK. Thereare learnt persons and sasthrikals in our forum. If they enlighten such things,no person would make query regarding third upaveetham or elder sisternamaskarams etc, just to quote two recent readings. 2.Chain in trailer buses Earlier in trailer buses, we couldsee the two chains attaching the smaller backside unit with front regularbus. Now foldable fiber covering is madefor it and steel bottom is provided between the units. Many like to travel inthe joining area. PROBABLYPEOPLE LIKING THRISANKU SWARGAM. In old buses one can see the tar road through the side openings. The break down buses, Lorries, carsetc are pulled by another bus, after hooking and chaining. Stainless steel big size chains areused for this. Earlier in Chennai, on could see atleast 2-3 buses while traveling about 30 KMs, standing in the middle of roadsdue to BREAK DOWN. We have to thank for the better maintenance, now a day BREAKDOWN buses are very rare in Chennai. 3.Firewood and charcoal shops. Mostly these shops are havingordinary beam balance and the two arms are having two square wooden planks, suspended using 4 chains from top. One arm for commodity and another for measureweight. In village areas paddy, tapioca, etc are also weighed using suchbalance. Balance itself may be suspended using chain from some heavystructures. 4,Weight lifting with pullies using lever method. Heavy weights are lifted easilyusing multiple pullies, and they use chain for lifting and rolling on thepulley wheels. Mr Venkitaraman, Perinthalmanna had mentioned this to me. 5.Pathala karanti (To get back bucket from wells fallen due to breaking of rope) I do not know whether any hardwareshop is selling Pathala karanti now. Most people use motor for lifting water to overhead tank. In case of power failure, in remote villages, water may be fetching using bucket. Some Kerala temples may be usingbuckets for lifting water from wells FOR ABHISHEKAM. For other uses water ispumped from wells. Pathala karanti is a few chains about a foot length with sharp hooks connectedalong the circumference of a thick metal sheet (hooks at down end). The sheet is having a central ring throughwhich rope is connected. It is at least 3 times more weighing than bucket.Lowering and slowly moving along sides will hook the bucket in the pathalakaranti. 6.Pathala karanti thannae kinattil veenaal (If searching equipment itself fell into well?) It is a local saying in our area. The person using the pathala karati should be an expert and the rope should beof quality and knot should be perfect. If any of them fail? The searchingpathala karanti itself would go in to well. The saying is used about the authoritativepeople. They should be able to listen carefully, understand and decide thematter. If understanding fails, listening fails and control fails? 7.Chains in front of Hardware shops. Major hardware shops sell stainlesssteel chains. There are also shops selling only different types of chains, pulley etc. For swing thookuvanchi etc, there are shops taking order and supply to specified length of chains withquality hooks. While hardware shops sell chains, connecting together bundles of iron rods (for construction works) kept forsale, they keep them chained and locked in front of the shops. Some having godown keep there also. 8.Chain in trains. Mr. Venkitaraman, Perinthalmanna, reminded me of the chainpulling in trains. Red colouredchains with handle are provided in accessible (??) areas in compartments, pulling of the same gives alarm signal to driver and guard to stop the train. Now a day chain length is very less and only a red rod is seen near entrance. With sleeping arrangements and facility for switching off the light, I doubt, unless previously observed, it is difficult to observe the location of chain puller. In Electric trains if people are only sittingchain pulling is easy on urgency. If passengers are standing I think, here toodifficulty is there. 9.Toilet room cups and chaining. Earlier toilet rooms had only watertaps and no cups in trains. Passengersused to have their own cups. Now most reserved compartment have cups near closet,CHAINED to somewhere. Thereason for chaining- in one lines our culture. Theft, taking away for personal useby some passengers, throwing away just likes that etc etc. The hygiene of thecup cannot be thought much. Most time, we have to clean and use. 10.Human chain. Many a time to show the unity, markthe occasion or for a protest also, human chains are formed. Ones hands areextended and hold by other along the roads etc. 11.Chains in counters. In sophisticated banks just toindicate queue has to be there, chains are provided on either side on some makeshift small pillars before the counter. In some banks this chaining is forabout 2 feet distance, next client has to enter there, after the first finishhis transaction. A very big ethic and privacy. Update- Now most banks have closing grill doors of collapsible type. Afteropening chain is provided and locked so that hardly one person can enter bankthrough the gate. 11a.Aerodromes One can see such chained queues in aerodromefor embarking and disembarking passengers in the entrances to the lobbies. One can find crude form of such chains inPublic roads also to divert vehicle traffic. 12.Chained spectacles. Many people use gold /silverchained spectacles so that they wearspectacles as garland when not used. Spectacles would not get lost or misplaced.Though this does not give an appearance, still spectacles would not miss. I have also seen in those dayspeople keep a fountain pen, clipping in pocket, but have a chain shiningoutside. 13.chaining insane. I thought of writing it in the endof this posting. Many a time, using small chains insane are also tied so thatthey would not run or become aggressive. It is also believed, keeping a small chain in leg, curing may also occurfor the mental problem. 14.Locking luggage Due to frequent missing of luggage,in reserved coaches Indian railways introduced locking arrangements with hooksprovided in the bottom of the seats for luggage. In railway stations one cansee vendors selling chains and locks either in platform or sometimes in trainitself. This helps very much. Manypeople instead of using hook, chain luggage together. Now in Volvo buses and expressesbuses in nights many keep luggage on loft and chain it to rods. 15.Oonchal in marriage. During marriages oonchal is afunction after garlanding. For this, oonchals are make shift type and justswing a little and the plank can accommodate just two. It is suspended mostlyfrom a top road using chains. Sri Venkitaraman, Perinthalmannahad mentioned to me a word- Aattukattil(Swinging cot). It is called thookuvanchiin Tamilnadu and central Kerala. It canaccommodate 3 or 4 persons sitting or one-person relaxing/sleeping. The personshould not roll, or be alert he is taking nap in thookku vanchi. Or elsechances are there for falling down. 16.Vacation game. One day I was playing a game oftrain in the thookuvanchi with my grandchildren. Swing movement meant train runningand stop means a railway station. The driver would sit in the front edge, andtwo children sit on sides (Sitting) and one will sleep (Berth). The driver would make the sound-Puvaaaaannnnnn whistle and Kutchu Kutchu Kutchu Kutchu Kutchu ….. Train runningand halt with a puvan and restart in intermediate stations till reaching laststation. One grandson told- Thatha is driverand we are in 3RD SLEEPER. NOSEAT OR BERTH IN AC COACH. What to do? The train moved and reacheddestination. Now the turn has become ofanother grandson. He repeated the Puvanand Kutch kutch. Now the turn has come of theparticular grandchild. He sat on edge and said- YOU ALL ARE IN AC SLEEPER. Thistrain we got births. Feeling nothing special we all said ok. The train moved HE RAISED THE VOICEVERY SLIGHTLY PUVAN …. And in a low voice kutchu kutchu and kept quiet. I asked why the train is notmoving. He replied- Thatha…you are in AC coach of the train. Train is moving. You are not hearing kutchkutch loudly. Then he slightly raised kutch kutch and again keptquiet as if nothing happened. My wife was witnessing these scenesat times. Waiting for an occasion to comment on me she said - You are fit for adriver only when passengers are in ordinary sleeper class.I agreed. WithPuvaaaannnnnnnnn and Kutchhhh Kutchuuuuuu, I had lost much energy.
