SOFA CUM BED I recollected an incident occurred about 25 yearsback on seeing a shop repairing old type sofa cum bed while coming after a joboutside in Trivandrum. I felt on seeing it now too along with modern differenttype of sofas, there are old type sofas also exist. They have not extinct.
At one time in Kerala and Tamilnadu, sofa cum bed was most popular.Invariably the main room had one/two sofa cum bed. I recollect whileconstructing my home in native I fixed the doors in such way sofa cum bed couldbe comfortably placed in the main room. So much priority for sofa cum bed atone time. The old type wooden sofas were getting replaced with sofa cum bed. If we look in the repair shop, we can see the bodyis built with quality deal wood and springs are provided for cushion effect andabove that sponge is provided and finally the plastic sheet/special cloth is fittedto metallic frame for sofa cum bed. Really it was a bed without spreading for many duringafternoon nap. Instead a cot with bed a sofa cum bed was most convenient totake siesta watching TV. I had to dispose many things on packing a lorry loadwhile coming to Chennai on retirement. This included my dearest new sofa cum bed. After constructing home in Chennai new modern sofaset was provided, but length beingless, I decided to place a single sofa also along with the main one. Fortunatelythe sofa selected from woodpecker had no side-fitting Yes – Now my hall has sofa in which we couldrelax, somewhat like the old sofa cum bed. Many a timewe used to think, how fortunate to have selected the sofa without side fitting-happily we can relax, relax and watch TV and sometimes fall asleep in the night.Only thing while guest come it may not be decorum to lie on sofa. Update- Sofa got damaged, I purchased a modern sofa cumbed in OST. But not so comfortable like old metal frame sofa cum bed. Initiallyit was in my room. For my office room in the home, I thought ofpurchasing a sofa cum bed for persons to sit. One furniture shop had the old model sofa cum bed.But my son did not approve it telling in no time it could tirrrrrrr due to old stock.Confirming it, there were corrosion in the framework, plastic sheet tooappeared dim. We searched. No furniture shop is having sofa cumbed in bed. Finally we sawan aristocratic shop. Knowing clearly the price would be high we entered theshop. Ha ha, they had two sofa cum beds in wood with sponge bed and removablecover, one having more width than the other in OST. They gave theexpansion outside teak wood polished for OST. It has a lengthy drawer also so that bedspreads, pillow etc. can be kept. Opening the drawer with cover, sofa will become doublethe size, one of the sponge seat can be moved and placed over it. I noted thereare two sponge seats on clear examining. In the evening it was delivered quitefitting in my room. My son was happier than me on seeing it. I was stillthinking of the very high price paid. My note-This one had to be moved to hall. Now the incident- One of my brothers had a sofa cumbed in the hall of his house. Also a cot in the hall. He had two sons. His younger son VOLUNTARILY AGREED for sofacum bed. The other comfortably used tosleep in the cot. The younger one-day explained the reason for hisaccepting sofa cum bed. When guest come most like cot and the person-using cotonly has to sleep in the mat in the floor. Though not so comfortable, he canuse sofa cum bed. He hadto sleep in mat only when two guests come. At least 5 days in amonth guests were there… He smiled and asked me- Chitthappa- which is better? Years have passed. Now too on seeing him I recollectthe incident and talk to see his smiling. Update- Again though stainless steel furniture have started appearing but stillto see sofa cum bed of the old type in Chennai. Hope a reappearance. Writer-R. Gopala Krishnan dated 9-1-2014.
