POOTTU- LOCK (പൂട്ട്) Dear friends,
How manyvarieties of locks are there? I amtalking of physical locks here. Commonly we use locks which can be opened andclosed with key. There are locks which are called press locks, for which no keyis required for locking whereas for opening key is required. In addition number locks arethere. Number locks open for a combination of numbers and close even for slightalteration to opening combination. All the above type of locks have their ownmerits and demerits. And varieties of sizes and types. The number of leversincreases on size increasing. Some locks arefitted to the equipment like cup boards, doors etc some are used with anaddition of padlock fitting. Now with boxes with zips, small sturdy lockshooked through zip holes are there. Whether we desire or not locking is compulsory for boxeswhile travelling in flights. We all waitanxiously for opening of door locks of the trains in the departure stations.The same is with many buses also. For flights we wait away not in front of theplane. We may be seeing so many other activities going on some times. Whatever we lockgate, stairs etc. animals like cat would jump over the walls, stairs. They havespecial approval. Butpoor bigger animals like oxen or horse cannot do it. Birds- They wouldfly over. More over catscan also elongate their body to a certain extent. Kitchen windows are providedwith close grills on account of it. But there are clever cats which find outother ways to enter cleanly observing other openings. Some cats would wait andsilently follow us without our knowledge. Poottu is alsoused to mean attaching oxen to carts, for ploughing etc. Recently I hadpurchased some bricks and sand for petty maintenance in a morning from ahardware shop. It had to be transported. A small distance. But the cart man started feedingthe bullocks. On my query he said- the oxen would not move a foot without feeding.I waited till they are fed and then items loaded and transported. Chaining an animal likecat or a person insane and not controllable is also called locking. Herephysical locking need not be there. Kata Poottikkal (compelling to close the shop) is used to defeat in business for personal rivalry. Normally all businesspeople have association and harmony. A small variation of poottu is puttu asnack item in Kerala. People keep keysafely. If lost many would get duplicate key deposited from relative’s home andopen and replace lock and key. For some institutionsimportant locks may open between specified time using 3to 4 keys. Some locksmay open using key operated clockwise. Some anti-clock wise. Some may open keyoperated twice etc. etc. Many locks operate electronically. Originally posted on 23-2-2014.
