VALAVILTHIRIVIL SOOKSHIKKUKA CAREFUL AT BENDS AND TURNS Dear friends,
YesterdayI was seeing “Rajakumari” a Tamil soap in the SUN TV. For the Banarasbackground and music in river Ganga premises the serial is interesting. The heroine NEELAMBARI was going throughnarrow lanes of Varanasi and two persons observing her from lane corners toattack her. A sanyasin sitting in another lane corner notes the same and giveshis spear to her to attack them. This reminded me of the bends and corners. Today my posing is about bends and corners. Sincerely, GopalaKrishnan 20-2-2013. Reposted on 19-2-2021 after editing and updating information.R. Gopala Krishnan 1. Hairpin bends While wetravel in the hill section roads we can see such boards as the title and roadsigns in many locations. In the planes too we have such sharp bends and turnsin the roads but lesser in number. These are accident-prone areas and drivershave to be careful while negotiating such points. Two wheelers and threewheelers have to be still more careful. The vehicles has to reduce speed, gives audio signals while negotiating such points. In the Kollimalai route there are more than one hundred hairpin bends, but all are small ones. In myarea there is one such sharp corner in the bus route towards Madampakkam LordSiva Temple. Most vehicles gives horn from about fifty meters away whilenegotiating. Even then there was a clash between two buses about six monthsback there. Fortunately the public transport was with less speed and there wereno major injuries. Ironicallyin the Kodaikkanal route from Base near Batlagund, there is only one turn, with a goodslope at Pannaikkad. There are no hairpin bends in the route if my recollection is correct. In the Kalpetta (InKerala-Towards Vayanadu) route there are about 9 very sharp hairpin bends. Longvehicles have to take back the vehicle and again move forward to negotiate someof the bends. In theOoty Hill section and surrounding routes there are many bends and sharpcorners. In the Sabarimali bus route also there are many in the hill section. 2. House plots While Iwas looking for a plot of land forpurchasing and constructing a home in Chennai, my well-wisher colleague toldme- Sir, Do not purchase corner plots. They would be the first ones affected on any road widening. 3. Elephants and Bends I have read if elephants chase, it is bestone has to run through narrow lanes and taking bends. Elephants have difficulty in bending and running. In a recentcorrespondence, Sri Venkitaraman, Perinthalmanna had written to me that Elephants could run faster than humans. 4. Valanja vazhi kootae chinthikku (Think ina different manner) Sometimes told also as vakraBuddhi, there are some people who used to have always a twistedthinking. They would not think in the straightforward manner like others.People use to be cautious while talking to them. They would alwaysread in between lines. 5. My bore well motor It wasabout 2 months back. My bore well did not pump water .Electrician came. He saidthe work is complicated, all the pipes going in to well have to be taken out,and valve and filter have to be replaced mostly. I agreed for doing all thejobs required. He replaced everything, put back, motor pumped water. Next daythe problem repeated. He againchecked for air entering, set right. Next day again the problem repeated. He againbrought the people, took all the inside pipes, again checked. Water pumped onthe day and again failed. He toldme- Sir, I have checked everywhere except the corner bend and a small length ofpipe from motor to bore well. Let me cut open the cement works and see. Yes, there was the culprit- A PVC 90 degree corner in the bottom of the motor had developed crack. He took and showed it to me. Air was entering through the crack. He replaced, just as a mason again plastered. Afterwards no problem. Update-Eight years have lapsed. So far noproblem. One cannever expect such a crack to occur inside a plastered area. Working more thanfour days, I gave him 500-00 in addition seeing his labour. Generallyin the pipe connecting motor pumping to overhead tank, technicians ensure notmany bends and corners are there during installation. One or two could bethere. 6. Bend and corner- a point vulnerable. If wetake the LPG stove, the connecting pipe bend in the platform is vulnerable. Ifwe take the chimney the bend to outside is important for proper suction. If itis connected just above , more suction would not be there. 7. Valaikkam- Otikkaruthu (Bend, not break) There isa saying. We can bend. Not break. This is while controlling children or talking of badpoints of others. A bend can be set right. Not a break. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
