Q2         What did our ancestors do that still blows your mind?

A2          Jim Newgate October 22-2020History · Second World War buff

What did our ancestors do that still blows your mind? Great question. Dolmen, a
type of stone monumentfound in a variety of places throughout the world.
Dolmens are made of two or moreupright stones with a single stone lying across
them. The most widelyknown dolmens are found in northwest Europe, notably in
the region of Brittany,France; southern Scandinavia; Britain; Ireland; and the
Low Countries.

The term dolmen is also used in relation to sites incentral and southern
Europe, particularly central and southern France, the Iberian
Peninsula,Switzerland, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean. Dolmens are
also known from parts of Africa and Asia.More than 30,000 such monuments,
making up some two-fifths of the world’stotal, are in Korea alone, and in 2000
three of the Korean dolmen sites—atKoch’ang (Gochang), Hwasun, and Kanghwa
(Ganghwa) in South Korea—were designated UNESCO World Heritagesites. Picture
below One of many dolmens in Ch'unch'ŏn (Chuncheon),Kangwŏn (Gangwon) province,
South Korea.

The dolmens of northwest Europewere built in the early Neolithic Period (New
Stone Age), which began in Brittany about 5000 bce and in Britain,Ireland and
southern Scandinavia about 4000 bce. Sites in central and southernEurope were
constructed at a similar date, but that corresponds to the middleor late
Neolithic in those areas.

Outside Europe, dolmens werebuilt over a broad date range, and they continue to
be constructed in some parts of the world—such as the island ofSumba,
Indonesia—up to the present day. Picture below Poulnabrone dolmen,County Clare,
Ireland.

The Breton word dolmen wasoriginally used to describe the wide variety of stone
monuments or, “megaliths”(meaning large stones), being discovered across the
world. There is considerable diversity in those monumenttypes, but they
nevertheless share a number of common characteristics. Allconsist of a large
capstone or capstones supported by a number of smallerupright stones.
Thatcollection of stones creates an enclosed chamber area. The chambers of
dolmenscan vary in both shape and size. Some are the size of small boxes, while
others are tall and long enough for people to not only stand but alsowalk and
move around inside them. When many dolmen sites were excavated, archaeologists
determined thatthe chambers were often used for the burial of the dead.
Moreover,it was not uncommon for many people to have been buried in those
monuments andtheir bones to have been mixed together in a communal deposit. For
that reason, dolmens areoften referred to as chambered tombs, and
archaeologists believe thosecollections of bones to be ancestral remains.

Because dolmen sites vary so significantly by region and history, archaeologists
in many areas use the term dolmen only in a very generalizedsense. Many prefer
to use more-specific descriptive names. In Britain, for example, portal dolmen
indicates that a monument exhibits a distinctive pair of stones, the portals, at
the entrance to the chamber. Most sites called dolmens inBrittany are more
precisely passage graves, so called because a passage leadsto the chamber area.

Q3         What facts are too terrible for ordinary people not to know?

A3          Matthew Brooks 21-2-2021-StartupConsultant at Seven Parallel
Consulting, T at Startup Consulting (2018–present)

1 Chameleons don’t change colorto blend into their surroundings.

What we think: Chameleons change their color when in danger toblend in with
surrounding objects, becoming invisible.

Reality: This animal’s skin color change is caused by its emotional and
physiologicalstate. It is also an original way of communicating with their
kind.Light and temperature also play a part in how chameleons look.

2 Frankenstein is the scientist’sname, not the monster’s.

What we think: Frankenstein – a character of novels, films, andstage
productions – is a monster risen from the dead.

Reality: In the novel Frankenstein; or, The ModernPrometheus by Mary Shelley,
VictorFrankenstein is a student who created a living being out of non living
matter. The creature turns out to be a monster. However, he didn’t have any name
in theoriginal book, and so "Frankenstein’s monster" would be his
correctappellation.

3. Hypothermia isn’t whatcauses colds

What we think: You catch a cold if you’ve been exposed to lowtemperatures for
too long.

Reality: What we call the "common cold" is a viral infection. Thatmeans it’s
caused by a virus – not the weather – transmitted from a sickperson to a
healthy one. Cold weather, however, can be favorable for the virus:according to
research, lowtemperatures lead to a sharp decrease of antiviral signals
produced bythe immune system. But if the virus doesn’t enter your body, cold
weatherdefinitely won’t give you a cold.

4. Deodorant and antiperspirantaren’t the same thing.

What we think:"Deodorant" and "antiperspirant" are synonyms. They act in the
same way and have the samepurpose.

Reality: Our sweat doesn’t have ascent of its own. It only smells because of
the bacteria that live on our skin. Antiperspirants are made to deal with the
sweat, whiledeodorants only fight the smell. Deodorantis classified as a
cosmetic product, whereas antiperspirant is considered adrug since it alters
the function of the skin for a while, suppressing the flowof sweat.

5. Ducks mustn’t be fed withbread.

What we think: It’s so nice to sit on the riverbank on a fine, sunny day and
feed the ducks with bread crumbs.

Reality: This food is unhealthyand even dangerous for ducks. Birds like the
taste of bread, but it doesn’t have any nutritionalvalue for them. They stuff
their stomachs full of crumbs, leaving no room forsomething actually
beneficial. This diet causes a wing deformity known as "angelwing" or "airplane
wing."

6. Each of us has perfect6-pack abs.

What we think: By doing ab exercises, I can get a perfect 6-packstomach.

Reality: Each of us has abs. Theproblem is that they are hidden under a layer
of fat. And you won’t get rid of that fat by doing sit-ups– you need a diet and
cardio.

7. The small bumps on the F andJ buttons are there to help you find the optimum
typing position

What we think: What are these ridges on the F and J keys for?Perhaps to help
blind people type?

Reality: When we type, our fingers cover the buttons A, S,D, and F (left hand)
and J, K, and L (right hand). The ridgesserve to help you place your hands
correctly without looking at the keyboard:the F and J are the keys where your
index fingers should sit.

MY NOTE- I was wondering why such ridges in the computer key board

8. Fish shouldn’t be kept inround tanks.

What we think: A round aquarium with a goldfish is an excellentdecoration for a
house, and they can often be seen in movies and cartoons.

Reality: Bowls are extremelyharmful. For one, they don’thave enough room for a
filter, and the water in an aquarium quickly gets dirty. In addition, changing
the water daily is very stressful for the fish. There'sno room for a heater
either, hence large temperature fluctuations. The area of the water surface
issmall, which means a shortage of oxygen for anything inside. Andthis is not
even the full list of arguments against this type of aquarium.

9. A car’s rear view mirror canbe switched to night time mode.

What we think: It’s terribly uncomfortable when the light ofanother car’s
headlights reflecting in your rear view mirror is glaring rightin your eyes.
But there is no getting around it.

Reality: Most cars have manualrear view mirrors. If you have one, just flip the
tab at the bottom of the mirror. The angle of thereflection will change,
enabling you to see everything behind without beingblinded.

10. Adult cats shouldn’t begiven milk.

What we think: Milk is theperfect food for cats. It’s for agood reason that all
cartoons and ads show us this image.

Reality: Adult cats are intolerant to lactose, a milk sugar. To digest it, the
feline digestive system mustcontain the enzyme lactase. Young kittens produce
plenty of lactase,so they are pretty milk tolerant. But as they grow up,
lactaseproduction rates decrease. Formature cats, drinking milk can lead to a
stomach disorder – most oftendiarrhea.

My note- New information to me

11. Most cars have an indicatorshowing which side the gas tank is on.

What we think: When driving aborrowed car, you always haveto get out at a gas
station to see which side the fuel cap is on.

Reality: The majority of new carshave a little gas pump symbol on the
instrument panel. Next to the symbol, there is an arrow pointing tothe side
where the fuel cap is.

Q4         Which Hindu goddess is more powerful: Durga or Kali?

A4          Rangaswamy Sundar Raj April22, 2019 Doctor at Self-Employment

Kali and Durga look distinctlydifferent and most Hindus can easily distinguish
between the two.

However, Kali and Durga are the same Shakti goddess. Kali won’t allow any
movement and Durga is a practical goddess.Does this mean that Durga is more
powerful than Kali?

Suppose that we are about to fight with an opponent. Should we take thehelp of
Kali or Durga?

What happens if we pray to Durga?

Durga will enable us to kick the hell out of our enemy.

What about Kali? Kali will abolish all of ourmovements. Thenis it a blunder to
pray to Kali when we are in dangerous situaations?

Kali will create an illusion that we are well protected and it would be agreat
disaster if our enemies try to harm us.

The advantage with Kali is that we do nothing and there is no question oflosing
the fight. The number of opponents won’t matter with Kali.

Thus, between Kali and Durga, Kali is a better goddess. However, Kali ismore
difficult to appease.

With Kali we get everything without doing anything. Mastering this is avery
difficult task.

Durga enhances what we do. Therefore, Durga is a practical god and easyto
appease.

Kali’s power is not limited by Shiva. Durga’s power is limited by Shiva.

Thus, Kali is a the ideal goddess giving unlimited power and Durga is apracital
goddess.

Q5         What is an incident that changed your life?

A5          Soundarya NH UpdatedAugust 20, 2020

This happened last year when I was still a college student and used totake city
bus for travel.

I took a bus for college, it was just 15 mins of journey so I preferredstanding
in front, beside the driver seat.

While noticing I saw the driverwho looked old with shabby clothes, maybe this
is where I had judged tooquickly!

After 2–3 mins he started to talk to me, he asked general questions likewhere
is your stop, which college you study etc. I replied proudly saying Istudy in
one the reputed institutions in Mysore. Meanwhile I got to know he isfrom our
hometown which is Chikmagalore. He asked about my studies and also asked my PU
marks?

I bragged saying that I got 94% in my 12th grade, I knew this would bemore for
a bus driver who would be less literate. He then congratulated me and asked my
KCET entrance ranking and adding “why didn't you try JEE Mains exams”???

This surprised me and I asked “how do you know about JEE-IIT?”

My stop was about to arrive.

He smiled and replied “My daughter studied from IIT-Chennai, currently working
in USA as asoftware engineer and my son studies electrical from NITK-Surathkal,
and theyboth scored 98% in boards”

The bus stopped, I had reached my destination, I smiled at him and waved,I got
down, the bus left but I was still numb and I realized howwrong I was judging
someone too quickly!

That day I learnt two things,1. Your only limit is your mind.

I often say my parents that we are middleclass family and IIT/NIT arenever our
thing!

I often put boundaries to my dreams saying “Can I do that?” and neverbelieve in
myself.

I restrict my dreams with my class, standard and where I come from…Thatday I
changed this thought, having so much of privileges why didn’t I doanything???

What’s stopping me???

2. Never judge anyone based on their appearance

That person looked so shabby yet how well has he raised his children. Hecan
afford for anything but still prefer to work as a driver earning only20/30k a
month and he completely loves his job.

We often think are controlled by situation and circumstances but the realthing
that controls us is our MIND.That day I promised “I’ll always dream BIGand
fight back to live them”Thank you,Love & Peace Soundarya

My note- It was one year back. I was waiting for an auto. A share autocame. The
driver was announcing in English- Share auto, Going via MahalekshmiNagar,
Kamarajapuram, Rajakilpakkam and up to Madampakkam temple. I got in theauto.
Another two also. Iasked him why he announce in English.

He replied- Many North Indians could clearly understand  English rather than
Tamil . I asked how much he has studied. He said he is a graduate and
drivingauto till getting a good employment.

Q7         Why doesn’t Tamil Nadu have a good airport like otherstates?

A7          Nakul Sethuram18-2-2021 Student

The short answer is: No airport was privatised even though there are four
internationalairports in the state!

Lengthy one:

Tamil Nadu has three International airports - Chennai InternationalAirport,
Coimbatore International Airport and Tiruchirappalli InternationalAirport

One Customs airport - Madurai International Airport.

And Two domestic airports - Thoothukudi airport and Salem airport.

International Airports

Chennai International Airport:

Chennai International Airport is the fourth busiest airport in India (asof
2019) and busiest of all the airports in Tamil Nadu. It has connections
toSoutheast Asia, South Asia, Middle east Asia, Europe and Africa. It’s a
gatewayairport of South India, butit’s losing to be a gateway to other airports
like Kempegowda InternationalAirport (Bengaluru) and Rajiv Gandhi International
Airport (Hyderabad).

It’s because, it’s an old airport and the planning and the maintenance ofthe
airport is too bad. And , it’s still operated by the Airport Authority ofIndia
(AAI). The airport doesn’t have a facility to handle F code Aircraft andalso
the airport lacks spaces. That’s why many airplanes are preferred to flyto
other cities.

The current terminal could handle 23 million passengers per annum andwith the
upcoming integrated terminal and satellite terminal, the airport couldhandle 45
million passenger per annum, which is not enough as the airportshould prepare
to handle at least 70 million passengers per annum.

The proposal for the second airport is still in progress…

Coimbatore InternationalAirport

Coimbatore is emerging as a developing city, but lacks
internationalconnectivity. The airport operates only three international
destinations -Singapore (Air India Express and Scoot), Colombo (Srilankan
airlines) andSharjah (Air Arabia). The state government is requesting the
central governmentto start a direct flight to Dubai for more than ten years.
And also the airport lacks maintenance, needs an upgrade to a world class
terminals, as other airports in Tamil Naduare getting upgraded.

Tiruchirapalli InternationalAirport:

Tiruchirappalli International airport has a more of connectivity
tointernational, but lacksdomestic connectivity. The airport got connection to
Delhi after tenyears of struggle. The airport is upgrading now into a world
class terminal, which may boost the connectivity.

Customs airport

Madurai International Airport:

Madurai International airport doing decently. It has connectivity to three
international cities- Dubai, Colombo and Singapore. And one terminal adjacent
the currentterminal is about to construct to boost the capacity.

Domestic airports

Thoothukudi airport and Salemairport:

The airport handles flights to Chennai and Bangalore (only Thoothukudi). But
still, the airportsshould be upgraded to boost the capacity.
