KUZHAMPU

Dear friends,

Two days back I suddenly felt weightand pain in my right leg in the night and
woke up. This was with the sensation ofsomething informing me to apply Vatha
mardhanam kuzhampu immediately. I appliedit after heating. I could get sleep.
Next day just like that I was blowing withlittle force using me scratching
stick on my thigh while lying in the bed. Iobserved all on a sudden weight is
reducing in the leg. Still I applied mykuzhampu after heating, the pain and
weight has practically disappeared.  Vatha mardhanam contain Neem oil as felt
fromits smell. Kuzhapu is 70% liquid. Kuzhampu has to be applied after heating
till it start evaporate.

It was directed to apply when I was havingsevere leg pain in 2002 by Kottakkal
Arya vaidya Sala along with reducingweight. From that time onwards I always
keep my Vatha marthanam ready in hand.Whether available in sufficient quantity
or not, once in six months I purchasea new bottle. I havefelt any time fresh
kuzhampu has much more effect.  Today my posting is about Kuzhampu.

Sincerely,

Gopala Krishnan 18-04-2021

I had posted on 18-12-2011 about Kuzhampu.  This is after re writing the same
withadditions, editing and updating. R.Gopala Krishan ITS retired.

1. Mukkoottu.

In olden days the kuzhampu mostlyused was Mukoottu and aged people used to
purchase from local DhanwantariVaidya sala. It was sure in all homes mukkootu
was there.  If not there, old people used to take it fromnext homes. Applying
Mukkoottu in legs and hand was quite common among agedpeople. Local Vaidyam
would have supplied other forms of Kuzhambu also forspecific problems or a
mixture. Mukkoottu means mixing of three types of kuzhampu.

1a. Mukkootu Theichhu kuli (Bath after applying heated Mukkootu)

I recollect in my native thelocal sasthrikal   whom we calledKochhumadathil
Periappa, used to apply once a fort night Mukkoottu throughoutthe body and take
bath. Hewas having a perfect body without any belly even in his 60’s. Wecould
see him loitering with a towel in the waist for Mukkoot absorption to thebody.
We could smell very much the mukkoottu. Kuzhambu theichu kuli was also common
liketaking bath after applying oil but not so common.

2. Ethentha- Kuzhambo?

It was common my father tellingto my mother when the kashanams (cut pieces of
vegetables in the dishes) wereover boiled and becoming smaller pieces or mix
with the liquid content.

Either sambar or pulisseri or anysuch dish, though still appear tasty, without
big Kashanams, they won’t give asatisfaction of consuming.  Even whileserving
during feasts, I am more interested to Kashanams than the liquid.

But certain dishes are tasty insomewhat Kuzhampu form only like the kalan or
thairu kkootans.

3. Ennum koncham kuzhambu

In Tamilnadu liquid dishes (Kootans)are told as Kuzhambuitself. Normally only
one curry will be in the day to day foodpreparation, it is mostly told as
kuzhambu. So it is com koottan as abo Monchildren and elders ask for more
kuzhampu.

Though there are dishes like vathakuzhampu and Pulikuzhampu etc.separately
still in general liquid dish is called Kuzhampu. Most home makersthink in the
previous day night what should be the dishes for tomorrow.

4. Medicine preparations in kuzhambu form.

Certain ayurvedic preparations calledKashayams are directed by Vaidyans to
prepare in Kuzhambu form and keep. Everyday, certain quantity of water to be
added, boiled and extract to be consumedas per measure.

I recollect my elder brother was onceprescribed “Gulguru Thikthakam Kashayam”
in that manner for somewhat paralyticform of leg, occurred suddenly. I was
about 15 years at that time.

Now most kashayams come ready preparedby the Ayurveda companies in such a way,
only diluting is required, no heating.

5. Paper Pulp

For preparing paper the rawmaterials like bamboo, sugar cane waste etc. are
first ground and made as pulpwhich is in Kuzhambu form.

6. What is kuzhampu form?

It is thicker and about 70% liquidin appearance. The ingredients   arebound
more and not loose like oils. In Kuzhambu form the ayurvedic medicines are more
effective and retainthe properties for more period than in the oil form.

Kuzhambu is greasier and alwaysadvised to apply after heating. On heating it
becomes thin liquid. The boiling and evaporation are veryquick. It is better to
have a karandi with ebonite holder forheating kuzhampu. The karandi should be
about 3 inches in diameter and like a semisphere, depth at centre about 1.5
inches. Care should be taken oil is not getting burning duringheating.

7. Kuzhambi ppovuka

When one is fully confused oftenit is told as Kuzhambi ppovuka. He cannot do
anything correctly. He has no concentration. Mostly itoccurs during tense
situations.

8. Today Kuzhambu

There are specified Kuzhambu fordifferent form of ailments. Certain medicines
only can be prepared in Kuzhambuform. Certain medicines only in oil form. It
depends on the ingredients. Kuzhambu is more costly than oils.

No kuzhampu should be heated withthe containing bottle. The required quantity
has to be taken to a Karandi andthen only boiled.
