KUZHAMPU

Dearfriends,

Yesterdayas per routine I  applied  my Vatha marthanam kuzhampu in my lower
legsand feet after warming. Normal leg pain gets vanished in 10-15 minutes
afterapplication.  Vatha mardhanam containNeam oil as felt from its smell. This
is in addition to pouring hot water duringbath in the morning. These provide
comfortable sleep for about 5 hours in thenight.

I  wasdirected to apply vathamardanam ( when I was having severe leg pain in
2002 )byKottakkal Arya vaidya Sala along with reducing weight. From that time I
alwayskeep my Vatha marthanam ready in hand. Whether available in sufficient
quantityor not, once in six months I purchase a new bottle. I have felt any
time; fresh kuzhampu has much moreeffect.  Today my posting is aboutKuzhampu.

Sincerely

GopalaKrishnan 10-09- 2021

1. Mukkoottu.

Inolden days the kuzhampu mostly used was Mukoottu and aged people purchased
from local Dhanwantari/any other  Vaidya sala. It was sure in all homes
mukkootumight  be there.

If not available in the shop, old people usedto collect it from next home.
Applying Mukkoottu in legs and hand was quitecommon among aged people. Local
Vaidyam would have supplied other forms ofKuzhambu also for specific problems
or a mixture. Mukkoottu means mixing ofthree types of kuzhampu.

1a. Mukkootu Theichhu kuli (Bath afterapplying heated Mukkootu)

I recollectin my home  the local sasthrikal   whom we called Kochhumadathil
Periappa, usedto apply once a fort night Mukkoottu throughout the body and take
bath. I amnot sure whether he used to dilute it a little or not. We could see
him walkingbefore his home with a towel in the waist for Mukkoot absorption to
the body .We could smell very much the mukkoottu. Kuzhambu theichu kuli was
also commonlike taking bath after applying oil but not so common.

2. Ethentha- Kuzhambo?

Itwas common my father telling to my mother when the kashanams in the dishes
wereover boiled and becoming smaller pieces or mix with the liquid content.

Eithersambar or pulisseri or any such dish, though still appear tasty, without
bigKashanams, they won’t give a satisfaction of consuming.  Even while serving
during feasts, I am moreinterested to Kashanams than the liquid.

Butcertain dishes are tasty in somewhat Kuzhampu form only like the kalan
orthairu kkootans.

3. Ennum koncham kuzhambu

InTamilnadu liquid curries or Kootans are sometimes told as Kuzhambu
itself.Normally only one curry will be in the day to day food preparation, it
ismostly told as kuzhambu. So it is common children and elders ask for
morekoottan as above subtitle.

4. Medicine preparations in kuzhambu form.

Certainayurvedic preparations were directed by Vaidyans to prepare in Kuzhambu
formand keep. Every day, certain quantity of water to be added, boiled and
extractto be consumed as per measure.

I recollect my elder brother was onceprescribed “Gulguru Thikthakam Kashayam”
in that manner for somewhat paralyticform of leg, occurred suddenly. I was
about 15 years at that time.

5. Paper Pulp

Forpreparing paper the raw materials like bamboo, sugar cane waste etc. are
first ground and made as pulp which is in Kuzhambuform.

6. What is kuzhampu form?

Itis thicker and about 80% liquid form. The ingredients   are bounded more and
not loose like oils. InKuzhambu form the ayurvedic medicines are more effective
and retain thequalities for more period than in the oil form. Kuzhambu is more
greasy andalways advised to apply after heating. On heating it becomes thin
liquid. Theboiling and evaporation are very quick.

7. Kuzhambi ppovuka

Whenone is fully confused often it is told as Kuzhambi ppovuka. He cannot do
anythingcorrectly.

8. Today Kuzhambu

Thereare specified Kuzhambu for different form of ailments. Certain medicines
onlycan be prepared in Kuzhambu form. Certain medicines only in oil form.
Itdepends on the ingredients. Kuzhambu is more costlier than oils.

Nokuzhampu should be heated with the containing bottle. The required quantity
hasto be taken to a Karandi(thava) and then only boiled… Boiling time is VERY
LESS and care has to be takennot to get the kuzhambu itself become flame

One has to use big Karandi with long handle. Now kuzhampu is available in
plastic bottles onlyand it has to be tranffered  to big thavafor heating. Big
thava with insulted handle is available in vessel shops
