Q1         If the house is built according to Vastu, what are itsbenefits?

A1          Bhuvana Rameshwar FormerTeacher, Updated 22h ago

We bought an apartment in Coimbatore in 2008 hoping to stay there
afterretirement. We used itas a guest house whenever we came down to Coimbatore
from Ooty. Itwas a beautiful apartment with lots sunlight, good siruvani water
and breezysouth side. But due tochange of plans we relocated to Bangalore after
my husband's retirement.

After using it for a few years as a guest house we rented it out. Thekitchen
was a beautiful, modern one on the S. E side of the flat. But the workarea and
stove were facing the south instead of east. I wanted it so to lookout of the
windows as I cooked. Vasthu says kitchen stove should face east. Here it wasn't
possible. All the apartments in this corner had the stove facingsouth with big
windows and an exhaust fan above.

We got good tenants, with good rent . They were all families like aPothy's
civil engg, Joy Alluka’s manager and by 2014 we wanted to dispose it aswe
needed the money for our new apartment in Bangalore.

Now started our torture. Whoever came to buy immediately complained thatthe
kitchen cooking area should face east only . So they would offer an amountmuch
lesser say 25 % less. We weren't in a hurry so we waited.

Many neighbours in our apartment wanted to annex our flat to make adouble
apartment or an adjacent flat for their married daughter or sister. Suchpeople
quoted a muchlesser price presuming we were desperate. Then angrily they
spreadrumours that our flat had ill luck. One house broker even asked us if
anybodydied here!

We asked him to check with the apartment president or even the watchmanif in
doubt. I snubbed rudely one of our neighbours, a PWD officer who was keento get
our flat as he had lots of ready black cash. I bluntly told his wife wewere in
absolutely no hurry to sell the flat.

Finally my husband after 2years of wait brought a civil contractor who put a
work area facing east with similar brown granite, matching tiles and a newFaber
chimney in our kitchen.

Within a month we got an Indianbuyer from Dubai and our apartment got sold for
a very good price, much to the surprise of our neighbours. Such is thepower of
Vasthu.

Whether it helps the residents or not for all practical purposes Vasthurules
should be followed. 😎

My note- My builder who knewvasthu morem  waited till the delivery ofmy
daughter in law.

All constructions made as pervasthu. But the water diviner found water only in
south west. Well should be innorth east. Otherwise it may affect the owner.  To
compensate he made water sump for municipalwater and a tap in north east.  Made
Poojaroom in the centre with two layers of RCC one at lower level.

Still after construction I was hospitalised, two times in ICU within twoyears.
Now I make it a point sump is full and evening time make wet north eastarea and
by planting pot plants andwatering . For the last 12years no problem is felt.

Q2         What is the most depressing thing about medicos?

A2          Aryan Kapoor Admin atThe Elite's Club Tue

One of my friend, who is a resident doctor in Orthopedics , was askedthis
question by the HOD on the first day of joining,

HOD: Do you have a room in hostel?

He: No, sir. My home is here only! I am a day scholar.

HOD: Take a room in hostel as you will not be able to go home now!

Yes, that’s a horrifying statement to hear on the first day of joiningitself,
isn’t it?

But that’s a necessary evil asthe task of a doctor is extremely complex and
requires years of hard work, patience and investment of time to excel in
it.That’s why most patients don’t value the work of a doctor and discard it
bysaying,

“What he did? He just saw me here and there and tested me with 2instruments and
that’s it! He also took a lot of money for it!”

People don’t realise how muchhard work is required to get to that level of
accuracy and precision todiagnose a problem that complex in a few minutes.

Just get yourself treated by a Quack and you will realise the difference!Let me
illustrate my point further,

A big industrialist wasreported that there was a glitch in a very crucial
machine due to which the entire unit was not able to work. He consulted
manymechanics but none was able to solve the issue.

Finally, someone told him about a very good mechanic who was an expert. The
industrialist asked him to fix that and he demanded Rs. 10000 for that job.The
industrialist agreed.

That mechanic took a look at the entire machine for 2 minutes first, andthen he
took out hishammer and struck it on one part of the machine. The
machineimmediately started!

After that, this conversation happened between the mechanic adindustrialist,

Mechanic: So, pay me Rs. 10000.

Industrialist: What the hell! You just struck hammer after 2 minutes oflooking
and you want Rs. 10000 for it!

Mechanic: Yes!  Industrialist: Why?

Mechanic: Because these 10000 rupees are not for taking a lot time to fixthe
machine, but forspending a lot of time to learn WHERE to look for and striking
the exact pointto fix the machine!

Industrialist: Here you go.

The industrialist in this scenario represents common people gettingoperated by
the doctor and the expert mechanic represents the doctor himself!

This is the most depressing part about medicos. Their super hard work
isunder-appreciated whereas in reality, they should be worshipped like GODS!

If doctors stopped workingfor even a day, the death toll in the country will
rise by at least 200percent! Just Imagine that!

Q3         When traveling in an air-conditioned car, when should weswitch the
recirculation mode on and off?

A3          Bala Senthil Kumar Asrequired Tue

This is a great question and a very pertinent, potentially lifesavingquestion
as far as India is concerned.

A few incidents have taken placewhen people went to sleep with the engine on
and AC running, windows shut, andnever woke up. Yes, they died.

Medical experts can tell us how much of a numbness a lack of oxygen cancreate,
but in a few cases that I did manage to pry out some information on, itwasn’t
gas leakage or exhaust fumes mixing or any of that as reports claimed. It was
just people leaving their ACson recirculation, rather than on fresh air, that
comes through the filters andfrom the outside.

The temptation when driving in a hot climate would be to get maximumcooling
from the car’s AC unit, and when outside air is hot, it will cool to alesser
extent than the recirculated air that has been cooled earlier andremains in
circulation.

The people in the car breathethis air and take in 20% oxygen, let out 15%
oxygen in the air they inhale andexhale respectively. Dependingon the car, and
the number of occupants, this can deplete the oxygen supply ifthe air
insulation is indeed tight. Smart designs would never allow this kindof
insulation from outside air, but assuming most filters and valves work
tocompletely cut off fresh air, it would be a good idea to somehow gauge
whenoxygen levels are going down, usually by noticing how people seem to be
dozingoff.

It’s not for nothing that Carbondioxide levels on flight deck affect airline
pilot performance

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/press-releases/carbon-dioxide-levels-on-flight-deck-affect-airline-pilot-performance/

It’s ridiculous and dangerous to be less than alert while driving orbeing
driven.

Personally, I keep my car’s AC tofresh air as long as there’s no excessive
pollution from the outside. In city driving, it may be desirable to
recirculate,as there’s density of pollutants in the air outside the car.

The moment I can roll down mywindow I do, but this may not be a desirable habit
formany, and noise may be high at highway speeds. But on the highway, for sure,
I’d suggest putting the AC on fresh air, and wait till the heat goesdown to
enjoy cooler air that the AC has to work less hard on.

My note- Probably on accountof this tourist Taxis  rest for a whileafter 4-5
hours and keep the doors open/window glass lower and switch off AC

Q4         Do you have anything important that needs to be said?

A4          Ramadevi Gidugu FormerSelf Employed, Full Time Mother. May 17

Few things.

1. Two weeks back I visited areputed hospital for one of ourfamily member’s
emergency medical problem due to covid at home. Since I wasasked not to enter
the hospital because attendents are not allowed, I sat undera tree, literally
on road. They made make shift sitting area with plasticchairs and tables.
Covered with a small plastic sheet from road.

Then suddenly an altercationtook between the duty doctor and a patient's escort.

The time was two o' clock at mid night. My son was inside finishing
theadmission and payment formalities.

Doctor was explaining sopolitely, no medicines from the patient side people are
allowed inside. Asked them to mention if patient is taking any medicinesprior
to covid, any ailments are there already. That they would check and continue
the same medication from their inside farmacy dispensery butwon't accept
medicines from these people. They can continue thosemedicines at home after
patient is discharged.

Patient's side people started arguing. It's better to call it asfighting.
Doctor called two hefty built security guards. Told these peoplefirmly if they
don't want to listen to him, they can take back the patient withthem.

Getting bed itself is very difficult, they don't want to take risk. Witha big
hungama they cursed the doctor and left after admitting the patient. While
goingthey blamed the doctors and the management loud.

Said “These star hospitals are money minded. They want to loot them. They
insist they should buy fromthem only to make huge bills. Again all tests,
scans, x-rays!! All foullanguage they used.

Later the same doctor finished that patient’s, and our formalities. Bythat time
it's 3.30. then he sat to eat his dinner!! Two sandwiches and tea!!Nurse told
us, he is having his dinner and asked us to meet him later if wehave any doubts.

We know, because that is the only available stuff at that time. My sonenquired
few minutes back. Entire medical staff was served the same stuff.

After sometime,Duty doctor'sshift ended and another one joined. I can see it
from those transparent glasswalls.

There was very cold breeze outside. He threw his gloves, head cap etc. into
hospital bin. Came out to reach his car. May be he is in his late thirties.

Advised me to sit in our car instead of in the open air. Lot of mosquitoswere
there.

I know he is damn tired. so,hesitantly asked him. ‘I alsobrought the medicines
we are using. Why his hospital won't accept? Why again Ihave to buy from his
pharmacy? Even all CT scans and lab tests results arethere with us.

He gave a tired smile.

Said ‘Amma!! How do we know those are genuine? Which doctor prescribed?Which
dosage? Do we have time to investigate all these? Just tell us premedical
conditions of the patient and the medicines you use. We give them.Tests reports
and all our doctors will check.

He said that and left. I didn't get heart to ask him anything furtherthough he
replied politely.

Later a paramedical staff ladycame and sat at the end of thetable where I sat.I
smiled at her. She too smiled and asked anyone is there inthe emergency ward.

I Explained her. Then I asked her the same thing.

She said that is the policy followed by all multi super speciality
starhospitals. In fact many hospitals follow that principle.

I kept a question mark face. Why?

She said, '’if you have mixed anything in those medicines? Because ofcovid we
are seeing all types of behaviours. Many are taking patientssignatures on white
paper, Stamp papers before joining in hospital. Highlyinsured patient’s people
approach secretly in some cases with evil designs.Money ma'am!! the most honest
minds also get tempted sometimes.

People’s original faces arecoming out only in emergency times. Especially those
rich people whose oxygen levels fell down alarmingly, aged people with lots of
property. Normal people can't afford these hospitalswithout insurance coverage.

Don't ask me anything ma'am! You must be watching news and reading
newspapers. You can guess what kind of ugliest things money does.

Our hospital doesn't want to encourage those kinds of things. We take all care
and don't wantto take any chance. We are responsible to the medicines given
byonly our hospital.Saying that she left the place.

I felt she is right.

Don't fight with the already tired hospital staff. They are there to helpyou.
They too get tired. Sometimes mistakes may be happening rarely but theyput
their best effort to give flawless treatment . After all they too arehumans. I
am not talking about conspiracies.

2. Don't take corona light. Till date still many are careless.

The other day our colony cleaning staff didn't wear masks properly.Sanitisers
also they are using sparingly. Association president scolded them.Said
thousands of people are dying with infection.

Do you know what they replied?

‘Sir, don't get angry. More people than the number you mentioned are dying in
accidents everyday. More people than this number are committing suicides every
day.Whomever time is over on this earth, they will die. Thisis one pretext.
That's it. If they have to die, if not corona some other thingwould happen! No
one can beat God's given life span!!!

😳😳

All our jaws fell down. We shouted in chorus.

‘ They are dying but notinfecting others. Every one may not die. The lung
infection and other damagesit does to body is not enough? How many days they
are taking to recover? Why they should suffer because of your negligence?’don't
preach us. Just shut up and follow the rules. If you can't, don't comefrom
tomorrow.’

They left to their work murmuring. ‘These educated people are so scared of
everything. Theyworry and won't let us also live with peace of mind'.

All these are tenth and plus two passed and trained in housekeeping. Livein
city. Still this is the way they think.

What about uneducated rural crowd?

Listen to the govt. Doctors. Take precautions. Live healthy and letothers also
live healthy. I felt these two are important things people shouldknow.

My note- About CT scan etc.Very costly. Normally for a disease people approach
nearest hospital. CT scan is taken. When going to anotherclinic/hospital they
again want fresh scan.

About 1.5 years back I developed after a fall non- steadiness as observedby my
nephrologist. He directed to a well observing neurologist. He advised totake a
scan as detailed by him and approach and gave an introduction letterabout me
taking appointment. My son felt first we go to neurologist withletter, and as
he directs we would take a scan,

As we felt, he wanted test from the lab requiring half an hour andresult. Test
cost was about 30% of CT scan. I was cured in one month but certain medications
are continued.
