THE MOON- CHANDRAN- PART 1

Dear friends,

Leaving SUN, the planet or subplanet which can be seen clearly by the naked eye
is the MOON.

While looking at Sun especiallyin a bright day in the afternoon, we might feel
strain in the eyes. Watching aSun in the morning which is told as Sunrise and
watching the Sun in the eveningwhich is told as Sunset is a thrilling and
enjoying experience. It need not bein the sea shore, many a time, while
travelling in train seeing sun through thehills nearby give such an experience.

The Sun has got hot red colour inthe morning and evening. After wards it turns
golden yellow and then bright formaximum time. There is a variation also in the
size during rising and setting-slightly larger than we see in the other times.

The Moon we can observe even after Sunrise on many days, sometimes evenup to 9
AM. Similarly we can see the moon well before sunseteven by 5 PM.

So as we say Sunrise and sunset, they do not coincide with moonrise and moonset
.But while much variation is not seen in the positionof Sun, with naked eye we
can observe changes in the position of moon.

If we see moon at a particulartime, on a day and note the location, after five
days, we can see it in adifferent location. But moon is almost having the same
colour- some brightwhite.

Another observation with nakedeye is the size of the moon. It is a cyclic, on a
certain day it is a fullcircle and on certain days it is practically nil, this
variation in its size isgradual either increasing or decreasing.

When it is above half size, wecan very clearly see some shapes in the MOON.

The day when the MOON is full isobserved fifteen days after the moon was seen
nil, by expanding day by day. Itis also observed after seeing Moon in its full
size; it gets reduce in sizegradually to nil after fifteen days. So once in 30
days we observe moon in full size.

Another interesting thingobserved is the time of appearance and disappearance.
The moon is not seenduring entire nights in the thirty days. When the moon is
in full size, it isseen throughout the night. When the moon is nil in size,
throughout the nightit remains dark. These are observed things with naked eye
by the common man.

While the moon is there, thewarmth is lesser, wind is more, and generally we
feel more comfort to say. Butthis is due to disappearance of warm sun appeared
in the day. Still it isdepend on the seasons.

Just think there is no warm sunin the day- we do not know how the night we may
feel in that case. Duringcontinuous rain days with full cloud, during rainy
season we feel muchchillness during the night, when the sun appears to naked
eye for some minutesor hours. Just think the SUN is not all appearing to naked
eye!!!  It is still there covered by dark clouds. Stillwe feel some warmth
since sunlight takes light years to reach us.

So comparing to SUN some moreexperiences are there with MOON.

This is a general write up onmoon, specially giving importance to its mythology
side. Hope to give an interestingreading.

Sincerely,

1. What is the reason for Chandra or Moon getting its size changed?

An interesting mythology story istold about it. King Daksha had many daughters.
Many of them were married tosage Kashyapa, a few to Dharma raja, TWENTY SEVEN
to Moon and One to Lord Siva.

One daughter married to Lord Sivawas the Sati. We know how she lost her body
creating fire and immolating…

Sage Kashyapa is the creator formany forms of beings in the earth through his
wives. The snakes, the birds etc.come in this group…

Coming to Moon, as already told27 daughters were married. They are the twenty
seven stars from Aswathi toRevathi.

But Moon did not give equalaffection to all his wives. With Rohini he was more
affectionate and happy. There is also a view with Ketta and Anisham he was not
so happy comparing withother 24 star wives.

Having different mothers or somesuch reason, all the twenty six stars decided
to inform father Daksha aboutthis. Giving respect to son in law, he called Moon
and advised to have equalaffection, without touching anywhere.

It appears for some time herespected his father in law’s advice but later again
become affectionate toRohini.

Again the daughters approachedand this time for not hearing his advice, Daksha
was really angry withMoon.  He cursed him to be body less.

1a. Moon approach Lord Siva.

Lord Siva sympathetically heardhis co brother’s request, made to him at
Kailasa. Moon had become body less.

But Lord Siva had his ownlimitations. He laid two conditions to moon-

I would keep you in vigil as anarc in my head.

I cannot fully restore your body. I wouldrestore it and on becoming full
growth again you will be losing the body. Somehowyou will be having body.

1b. Moon agrees to Siva’s condition.

Something is better than nothing.Moon knew very well nothing more could be
achieved. Sometimes if approached, cobrothers sage Kashyapa or Dharmaraja may
take stands more badly. Moon   simply agreed. Lord Siva worn him as an arc. So
Lord Siva became CHANDRASEKHARA.

So on account of this the cyclic size changeof Moon God occurring asper
mythology.

Still he was getting morehappiness with Rohini and partial to her. In many
templeswe can see depiction of Moon with Rohini on account of this. It
isbelieved if for any person moon is badly placed in the chart, worshipping
Moon with Rohiniwould reduce ill effect.

I will continue more about Moon tomorrow.
