THE MOON- CHANDRAN 4

Continued from part 3

Dear friends,

Yesterday after eclipse  at 9 PM the moon appeared very bright and notyellowish
bright  as on Pournami. Probablya relief after eclipse. I am continuing about
Moon in this posting also.

Sincerely,

13. Variations in the story of Rahu episode

I could read a small variation inthe story of Rahu episode during churning of
milky ocean while surfing the net.

It is Rahu did not occupy the end seat with Devas, but in between Sun andMOON.

Rahu was killed by SUN and MOONand not by Lord Vishnu. But Rahu head could
survive since he hasdrunk nectar and reached up to neck by the time.

13a. Guru taking away nectar

In the confusion Deva Guru(Jupiter)took away nectar and fled. When the Devas
and the Asuras realised that theKumbh was missing and Jupiter as well, they
stopped fighting to follow Jupitertogether. A long chaseensued Jupiter.

During this time, the Devasconferred together, apprehensive at the thought of
Jupiter consuming the entire Amrit, which would certainly make him the Supreme
of them all and they does notdesired it.

On the way GURU PLACED THE NECTAR POT ATFOUR PLACES TO TAKE BREATH, where
little drops were dropped. Theplaces where nectar pot were placed are Nashik,
Ujjain, Haridwar and Allahabad, - cities in India.

13b. Origin of Kumbha mela

The kumbha mela is conducted inthese four places. It is the period originally
ONCE IN 12 YEARS (when theplanet Guru transit Kumbha rasi)

14. Variation in the story of Tara.

I was a little more appealed bythe story of Thara and birth of Budha told in
various texts with slightvariation. I never wrote Thara eloped with Moon as
read in one response.

According to Atharvaveda, Budhawas born to Tara and Chandra. In addition to
Atharvaveda, Matsyapurana andBhagavata also speak about the birth and history
of Budha.

The story goes on to say that Tara, wife of Brihaspathi, was attracted towards
moon, when MOON  came to Brihaspathi in ACADEMIC PURSUIT ANDNOT When Guru
attended  YAGYA with Tara.

This version on reading felt moreappealing and more factual  to me.

Budha is the son of Tara and Moon. However, Rohini, wife of chandra brought up
Budha.

This also is a new informationthat it was ROHINI who brought up BUDHA.

15. Another variation in the birth of Budha.

Vishnu Dharmottara Purana provides a different story about Budha.

Sage  Kashyapa had three wives Aditi, Diti and Danuvu. Raja was the son born to
Danuvu. Raja loved Vaaruni, daughter ofVaruna. As a token of love, Raja
transferred all his powers toVaaruni.

Making use of these powers,Vaaruni ‘dissolved’ herself in water to reach her
father. However, Rajafollowed her and dissolved in water.

15a. Moon churning sea water

At  that time, Chandra or MOON  churned water for  begetting children. Whilethe
churning was in progress, Vishnu showed his reflection in water, resulting in
transformation of water intoDEVINE LUSTER. Then Guru’s wife TARA HANDS OVER
THIS LUSTER TO MOON’S WIFE ROHINI. Budha is said tohave born out of this
lustre.

Summing up this version, thedivine lustre is handed over to Rohini by Tara and
Budha is born of thislustre. Again my Tara balam logically go to TARA.

16 Ila- daughter in law of Budha

In due course after growing upbrilliant, Budha married ILA. But ILA got a
curse, that she would  be female fifteen days and male in anotherfifteen days.

Budha got a son of high calibreby name Pururuva through ILA. The lineage of
MOON is called CHANDRAVAMSAM.

17. Urvashi- Grand son’s wife

Pururuva was a great King andhigher capabilities, He had the power of traverse
to celestial plane and afriend of Indra, also hisgrand father MOON’s friend!!!.

Once while traversing like thishe found celestial dancer Urvasi going up after
coming  to earth plane. Unlike other celestialdances, Urvasi liked earthplane
more and desired living in earth plane also. king Pururuvas savedher  from some
miscreants who want tosteal her away.

This incident created a friendlyrelation between King Pururuvas and Urvashi in
the first instance. Thisdeveloped in to love between the two and Pururuvas
married Urvashi and for thefirst time, she remained in earth plane for pretty
long time.

18. Urvashi goes back to upper planes

Urvashi had laid down threeconditions for king Pururuvas to live with her. He
was keeping the same all thewhile.

Since Urvasi could not be spared for much time like this, devas created
acondition, where king Pururuvas had to violate them. Urvasi  so left him and
went  to celestial region.

Pururuvas lost  interest in things, become a wanderer. However, he again met
Urvasi who had occasionally came to Earth plane and livedtogether for many
years again.

The king Pururuvas and Urvasistory which may run to pages, I have written
earlier and not repeated again…

19. Urvasi and Arjuna.

Once when Arjuna went  to meet Indra his real father, the same Urvasi met him
and desired to marry him.Arjuna had come in the lineage of King pururuvas and
expressed his disabilityon this account.

But Urvasi replied for CELESTIAL PEOPLE THESE RELATIONS ARENOT SEEN, and still
when Arjuna, did not agree to her demand Urvasi cursed Arjuna to become
Sikhandi- Napumsakam.During Anjathavasa of Pandavas, this curse helped  Arjuna
to become a dance instructor in thepalace of King Virata.

>From this the saying has come- Urvasi sapam upakaram. (Blessing indisguise)

20. Do any legend that Moon and SUN were equally bright?

According to  mythology, the Sun and the Moon wereoriginally equally bright.
But the gods did not think this was a good idea, so they took a hareand threw
it at the face of the moon. The hare struck the moon andmade a dark blotch that
dimmed the Moon’s brightness.

21. Chathurthi

There is a story about the sayingthat on the Chathurthiday we should not look
at MOON.

On a Chaturthi day moon, the lordof the stars happened to make fun of Ganesh
for his bulging belly and laughedat him.

Ganesh got angry and cursed moon that he would never be permanently whole and
whoever lookedat him knowingly or unknowingly on the night of Shukla paksha
chaturthi daywould attract scandals and unfounded allegations.

When there is a difference ofopinion for any thing and every thing between two,
it is said- For looking atone by the other is chathurthi.

Now too we can see people withdifferences WILL NOT SIT FACE TO FACE.  On
chathurthi day many would not look at Moon.

22. What are lunar deities?

The MOON is considered in mostoccasions as male in Hinduism. But in certain
occasions considered as female.Similarly in many country mythologies MOON is
female.

23. Menses cycle of women.

The monthly cycle of the moon, incontrast to the annual cycle of the sun's
path, has been implicitly linked towomen's menstrual cycles bymany cultures, as
evident in the links between the words for menstruation andfor moon in many
resultant languages.

24. MOON in Astronomy, Astrology and culture.

Moon has very much importance inAstronomy and Astrology and culture. Two things
are related with MOON in theAstronomy- They are STAR AND THITHI of the day

Many samskaras are performedbased on star or thithi or combining  both. An
example is Ashtami Rohini, Lord Krishna’s birth day.

In many parts of India, forsraadha either thithi or star is referred. In
Astrology MOON has muchimportance. Based on the position of moon matching is
decided.

This is last part of the posting on MOON.
