AARTHHI (GLUTTON)

Dearfriends,

RecentlyI had been staying in a residency at Ernakulam in connection with few
templevisits and a betrothal function nearby. For convenience of travelling I
tookthe residency.  The morning buffet was complimentaryin the residency.

When I reportedat 9.15 AM, the counter man intimated us with a smile- We would
close the buffet at 10 AM. Afterkeeping things, first you may have buffet.
Since already brushing of teeth wasdone in train, we just washed the face and
came down after keeping our bags inthe rooms.I was travelling with wife,
daughter and grandson.

Selected itemswere there in buffet and ifanything different was required it was
charged. In the general itemsthere was banana boiled, and Puttu or Idiappam
with Kadlakkari which I favouredmuch. And very good iddali with pure coconut
chatni in 95% solid form.  There were also cut fruits.

Seeing onlyfew boiled cut bananas in the vessel I took 4 PIECES from them which
were BIGGERand two pieces of Puttu.  I was not foranything else since I knew
some what the limit of my stomach.

Still seeing the four banana pieces in myplate almost exhausting the container
with two or three small pieces left outmy daughter told- “Appavotae aarthhi
parumma. Ethna piece eduthrukkar- sugar verae?  (Look at the greed of father.
He, a diabetichas taken four pieces of Banana)

One ofthe rarest occasion my wife supported me- “Appa   from Keralalike these
more. Tomorrow he would not take, making a prediction cumcommand to me
pacifying daughter.

I foundmy wife taking more cut fruits, but since she supported me, I kept
quiet.  Mounam Vidwanu Bhooshanam. Many times I recollect it.

Mydaughter was somewhat correct. With one piece of puttu and banana cut,
mystomach was getting full. However to keep face I ate half of remaining
puttu, leaving place for coffee with difficulty.

Today mytopic is aarthhi. Sometimeshurry also may appear as something like
aarthhi if not clearly observed.  An interesting look in to aarthhi. I haveused
English word greed in many occasions.

Sincerely,

GopalaKrishnan 27-2-2013.

1. Aarthhi by nature

Somepeople have aarthhi by nature.  It neednot be through genes, but can be
through genes also. Aartthi need not be infood alone. It can be with anything
valuable or invaluable also.

But Lifco Tamil dictionary gives the meaningof greed as aarthhi for everything-
especially for food and money.

Aarthhiis a feeling -more is required than normal. Many times people with
aarthhiimpatiently take things for them. It can be in sarees, churidars or
otherdresses.
In this corona season for purchasing fruitsand vegetables due to Lock down
irrespective of the cost we can see greed with all
If the vehicle with the items may  not cometomorrow?

Most wantto purchase more and keep including milk and curd

In Malayalamfor eating with greed is told as – Aarthhi piticchu Valicchu vari
kkootuka”.

Butaarthhi could subside with repetition in case of even favorite foods.

But againappear after a time when there is sudden availability after a break.
Aftertaking pineapple pieces and jack fruit continuously for 5 days aarthhi
/desire subsidesfor them.

2. Aaarthhi about money.

Somepeople are crazy of keeping money.  Notto get other’s money. It is their
own money. But they want more to be KEPT ASCASH with them.  This is also an
importantgreed in the corona season.

Once theATM is filled with in a day cash gets exhausted. I had to visit 3 ATMs
to draw some money yesterday.

Many wouldnot get sleep, unless a fixed amount is with them. Now most sales men
in vans want cash payments.

RecentlyI read an article about brain. It is not known why plastic itself could
not befelt by brain as cash. It may take a long time for it. Every transaction
by plastic including Dhobi bill!!

Recently whenI went to my hospital their swiping line was not working. They
asked me to drawmoney and give. Fortunately I had taken my plastic for drawing
cash. I couldunderstand the value of different types of plastics on that day.
Using creditcard drawing money from ATM is like keeping 5 kg stone on head.

In many shops credit cards would notfunction, but Cash/ATM cards would function
perfectly in their machines

2. Feast and aarthy.

In thefeasts many things might be served one by one. Many of the items might be
moreliking by us. Even then, some people would ask more of all items. The
stomachhas a limit – Afterthat whether they liked or not the remaining has to
be left out.

3. Aarthy with ornaments and decorating items

This isseen more with women than men. They go to the shop to purchase within
10000rupees, and come out after purchasing for 30000 rupees, especially if they
haveplastic with them. This isalso because of thedaily limit of the plastic.

If theygo to a foot wear shop to purchase 2 pairs, while coming out most would
behaving 4 pairs. Evenfashion may get changed- This is a form of aarthhi.

While mywife go out I intimate thelimit under plastic, she can use.

4. Children and aarthhi

Childrendo not know how much they can eat. They would be eager to eat many
items andcompel parents to order in restaurants.

If it is in the home, then too we can seethem taking more things to their
plate, as if others would consume, and for himthere would be only less
quantity.

The child does not understand, others would eatonly after he is fully fed or
keeping reserve for him later.  Result either in hotel or in thehome, many
thing are wasted. 1/3rd of ordered items are eaten andremaining in the plate
half bitten by them….

5. Aarthhi in preparation.

Manywomen are of the thinking-What others would feel if proper quantity is
prepared.Every time, they atleast want 50% more to be prepared and of course
remaining givento cows.  They get blessings of Gomatha.

If 30iddalies are maximum required for five people, they would prepare 50. I
callthis feeling also as some sort of aarthhi (A feeling not sufficient) it is
not for them, butfor the family...

6. Textiles and Jewellery

If one ortwo more are required we can call it more desired, and if sufficient
and more quantityis there, still wanting- This is especially with respect to
jewellery thantextiles.

Anotheris with number and varieties of vessels.

7. Other items

To have anumber of ball point pens (above two dozen), to have bundles of paper
in stock, and on men side, having large number of shoes, shirts,   and still
feeling for more etc. all come ingreed.

We aregoing to write in one diary. But still keeping above half a dozen
diaries(Purpose is special mental happiness) is also some sort of greed.

Why, eventhe desire to have a 3rdlap too if possible comes under greed.  Or to
have even five or seven pen drives orother external memories.

8. My cordless mouse.

Aboutfour months back, my son in law complimented me with cordless mouse. All
thewhile I was using laser type and optical type.

Twomonths back I went to a familiar computer shop. I just like that asked
whethercordless mouse was there with him. He answered yes. Seeing it, I
purchasedit.  Last month again I purchased onemore along with a pen drive.  Why
Idesired to have more? How much money is spent? Is it attractionor aarthhi?
However next weekmy daughter in law wanted a pen drive and cordless mouse.
Without going to shop I gavethem as compliment.

Many moreinstances of aarthi are there like purchasing additional
flats/buildings,purchasing more and more lands, purchasing 3-5 cars etc.

InBangalore it is a common scene before homes, one car in park and another in
thestreet/road before their home.

If aperson say he has no greed that would be external. He may be greedy for
thingsin the mind.
